New York Times columnist Collins attempts a comprehensive account of the last 50 years of women's history in this sequel to America's Women, primarily focusing on the 1960s. Giving relatively short shrift to the current generation of young women, Collins centers the bulk of her attention on the baby boom generation (to which she belongs) and leaders like NOW founder Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem, as well as dozens of ordinary struggling women. The book's stronger parts include highlighting pioneers like Congresswoman Martha Griffiths, who began her political career in the 1940s and stories of laughably shortsighted sexism against Sandra Day O'Connor. We've come a long way baby!

I grew up in the sixties and lived through many of these changes. It's wonderful for women my age to recall these changes, but It's more important that the younger generations know how things used to be for women so they never allow those times to return. My book club read this book and we all loved it!. What discussions we had! This is a record of our lives, the pioneering women who fought for our rights, and the problems that still hold us back. Excellent read. I'm passing it on to my daughter, and buying a copy for my best girl friend.

Great Herstory!

Finally, someone has written an accessible, readable book about a critical period in American history. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "When Everything Changed." This is a wonderful, creative, and informative book about a revolution that seems to have gone unnoticed. For those of us who lived through these tumultuous times, the book is a refresher, a reminder of the struggle that was both personal and historical in nature. For those of you under thirty-five, it is a must read. You must know where you have been, to know where you are, so that you can know where you are going. You must understand your Herstory. (My only negative is minor. I understand that Ms. Collins did not set out to write the "definitive" history of the time period. But, I was distracted from some of the main points by too much reliance on the individual stories. On occasions, I felt overwhelmed by too much anecdotal information, too many quotations, and too many stories of individuals; albeit, fascinating in there own right. More analysis and less reliance on individual stories would have made this a truly great book.) On the whole, however, I highly recommend this book to all. I only wish this book was published when I was teaching my Herstory Unit! Oh, the stories you would be able to tell your students....It should be in every library from middle school and up. It should be on the reading list of every history teacher. Everyone will enjoy this excellent history.

Highly Recomment

I am a little over 100 pages into this book and I am learning so much about women in the past. I love this book, it's rich with lots of history and it covers a vast array of different types of women. This book is a must for your feminist collection. I would recommend this to anyone. It's an easy read with lots of information that won't bog you down, but enlighten you as your read and learn more about how woman are amazing and the journey those before us have gone through.
