Rigging Period Fore-and-Aft Craft, by Lennarth Petersson

Employing superb, clear draughtsmanship, this book illustrates each and every detail of the rigging of typical period fore-and-aft vessels.

The rigging of period ship models is arguably the most complex task that any modeler has to accomplish; the intricacies can be daunting and visual references limited. The author’s first book, Rigging Period Ship Models, was a triumph of clarity for those needing to decipher the complexities of the square rig and has now sold in multiple editions. This book does the same for fore-and-aft craft and deploys three typical eighteenth-century types – an English cutter, a three-masted French lugger, and an American schooner. Some 200 diagrams show clearly where each separate item of standing and running rigging is fitted, led and belayed. Whatever the requirements of the model maker, all the information is here.

This new paperback edition brings a visual clarity to the complexities of period rigging and will delight anyone with an interest in the rigging of traditional fore-and-aft craft.

Nice but disappointing
By JCK
I love the concept of this book and should get to know the earlier volume on square rigged ships. Wonderful clear drawings break the rigging of three museum models of vessels typical of their types into easy to follow units. But this is surely a great opportunity missed.

I am not qualified to critique the two sections of the book for my interest lies in the English cutter, and here I have to say that I was disappointed. The rigging on the museum model is reproduced without comment and without apparently any investigation of its authenticity. The rigging shown for the cutter is that of a late C18th vessel, and some of it does not ring true. The running (adjustable length) bowsprit for example is shown with stays too long to work at the shortest setting of the bowsprit, and these are pulled tight not with tackle operable from inboard but with lashings that would have been inaccessible at sea.

It would be fabulous to marry accurate drawings of this quality to descriptive and thus educational labels identifying features of the rigging by name and authorative notes explaining why the rigging was set up this way and describing its unusual features. Notes indicating typical proportions for pendants or the spacing between rows of deadeyes for example would be nice. Adding the sizes for rope and blocks taken from Steel or some other period source would be very helpful to the modeler. Some discussion of rigging not seen on the museum model would good too -- the boom guy or mainsail reef tackle for example. The drawing of the shrouds is very nice, but it shows only one side of the vessel with the fall of the shrouds turned up on the aft side of the shroud -- how is the modeler to figure out that on the other side of the vessel they would be turned up on the fore side?

This is a good book, and I do not regret owning it. It does not pretend to be an academic work and it springs from the author's considerable tallent as a draughtsman, but I can't help feeling that with some collaboration this could have been spectacularly succesful.

Worthy companion to Rigging Period Ship Models
By Mike Graff
Petersson has added a significant resource for builders of model sailing ships. As with his earlier work on the square rig, the layout and content of the new volume leave little to the imagination of the reader. Clearly drawn and fully labeled illustrations not only show how individual rigging elements go together, but also impart understanding of how the rigging 'works'.

Detailed attention is given to three 19th century ship types (cutter, lugger, and schooner) from three different countries (Britain, France, and the U.S. respectively). The line by line sequences of illustrations are easier to work with and understand than the tangles of numbered lines that often appear on plan sheets accompanying models. The reader can quickly determine where and how the standing end of a line is fixed, it's route through blocks, and where and to what the line is belayed.

The book does not address related matters such as basic line preparation procedures (whipping, worming, parceling, serving, etc.), knots and splices, line size or type, or sail making.

One element that might be added in a future edition would be station lines on the profile, deck plan, and generalized body plan views of each of the subject vessels. Their addition would help relate location of individual rigging elements to the shape of the hull as well as to mounting and belaying locations on the ship.

Rigging Period Fore-and-Aft Craft
By George D. Shaeffer
This excellent book is of special use to the ship modeler of any experience level. It shows the correct way to run the rigging lines for three different examples of this type of craft. It also allows modelers working on similarly rigged craft to make some well-informed decisions about how to rig those craft AND on what details to add that are not mentioned in the plans and instructions. Since rigging plans are usually one of the weakest points in the plans and instructions in kits, this book can be invaluable.

Squaring the Circle:Seven Steps to Indian Renaissance, by APJ Abdul Kalam

Dr Kalam calls for an Indian Renaissance, which he describes in seven steps involving the common people of the land, and in particular, the youth. He urges people to arise out of servitude to a vested ruling class, awake from the slumber of a passive democracy, and advance to manifest our destiny of a developed nation. He recommends that by turning inward and listening to the voice of our conscience, we can live a virtuous life and thereby build a strong and secure India.

The Fire This Time: A New Generation Speaks about Race, by Jesmyn Ward

National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward takes James Baldwin’s 1963 examination of race in America, The Fire Next Time, as a jumping off point for this groundbreaking collection of essays and poems about race from the most important voices of her generation and our time.

In light of recent tragedies and widespread protests across the nation, The Progressive magazine republished one of its most famous pieces: James Baldwin’s 1962 “Letter to My Nephew,” which was later published in his landmark book, The Fire Next Time. Addressing his fifteen-year-old namesake on the one hundredth anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Baldwin wrote: “You know and I know, that the country is celebrating one hundred years of freedom one hundred years too soon.”

Award-winning author Jesmyn Ward knows that Baldwin’s words ring as true as ever today. In response, she has gathered short essays, memoir, and a few essential poems to engage the question of race in the United States. And she has turned to some of her generation’s most original thinkers and writers to give voice to their concerns.

The Fire This Time is divided into three parts that shine a light on the darkest corners of our history, wrestle with our current predicament, and envision a better future. Of the eighteen pieces, ten were written specifically for this volume.

In the fifty-odd years since Baldwin’s essay was published, entire generations have dared everything and made significant progress. But the idea that we are living in the post-Civil Rights era, that we are a “post-racial” society is an inaccurate and harmful reflection of a truth the country must confront. Baldwin’s “fire next time” is now upon us, and it needs to be talked about.

Review
“A half century ago James Baldwin, the prophet in the American wilderness, delivered The Fire Next Time—as complex a reckoning with race, morality and human nature as we have seen. Jesmyn Ward has pulled together in this collection you now hold the incisive, sage, angry and deeply complex voices of a new generation, responding to many of the same questions that confronted us in 1963. To Baldwin's call we now have a choral response—one that should be read by every one of us committed to the cause of equality and freedom.”
—Jelani Cobb, historian

“In 1963, we were poised on a precipice, intellectually, spiritually, politically primed for the change we knew had to come. Now, some half-century later, we are again at the precipice. We are dismayed and disheartened to find ourselves here, aghast that the rules and players have changed but the game, somehow, is the same. What do we do, this post-Civil Rights generation, in the face of the same injustice, dressed in different clothes, coded in different laws? In The Fire This Time, a new generation of black writers speak with the ‘fierce urgency of now.’”
—Ayana Mathis, novelist

“Fires destroy things…burns them up…makes ashes for us all…But fires also keep us warm…give us a glow to sit by…to tell ancestry stories to the children against the rhythmic crackle of history…to make love to against the glow. The generation of segregations gave us The Fire Next Time…we broke down those walls…The generation after segregation gives us the water to mix with the ashes to build…something…anything all…in the words of Margaret Walker…our own. This is a book to pick up and tuck under our hearts to see what we can build.”
—Nikki Giovanni, poet

"Timely contributions to an urgent national conversation."
—Kirkus Reviews

"An absolutely indispensable anthology."
—Booklist(starred review)

"Ward's remarkable achievement is the gift of freshly minted perspectives on a tale that may seem old and twice-told. Readers in search of conversations about race in America should start here."
—Publishers Weekly(starred review)

"Groundbreaking."

THE FIRE THIS TIME, inspired by James Baldwin’s THE FIRE NEXT TIME, aims to be a “book that would reckon with the fire of despair and rage and fierce, protective love currently sweeping through the streets and campuses of America. A book that would gather new voices in one place … to dissent, to call to account, to witness, to reckon.” This work succeeds in all these things that it sets out to do, and more. It is a gripping lament of the past and present of the racial situation in the U.S., as well as a cautiously hopeful look toward the future.

"My only sin is my skin, ... What did I do, to be so black and blue?"
By W Perry Hall
"My only sin is my skin, ... What did I do, to be so black and blue?"
Fats Waller, "(What Did I Do to Be So) Black and Blue?""

The title of this choric collection of prismatic prose and poetry convoking for equality, compassion and freedom from fear, written by some of today's prominent and talented African-American writers, derives from the title of James Baldwin's groundbreaking The Fire Next Time which he ended with the fiery memorable passage:

"If we...the relatively conscious whites and the relatively conscious blacks, who must, like lovers, insist on, or create, the consciousness of others--do not falter in our duty now, we may be able, handful that we are, to end the racial nightmare, and achieve our country, and change the history of the world. If we do not dare everything, the fulfillment of that prophecy, re-created from the Bible in song by the slave, is upon us: God gave Noah the rainbow sign, No more water, the fire next time!"

I will never know the pain and fear and rage felt by African-Americans, including the artists who contributed pieces to this innovative anthology full of timely contributions to the current critical conversation on racial relations in the U.S. Nonetheless, if this book can be a bridge to better, fuller understanding by me (which, I think, it most definitely is) and others similarly situated, such a comprehension of the unknown being, after all, one of the main goals of artists and writers, then maybe it will help us all play some part in changing ourselves and perhaps the world for the common good.

Jesmyn Ward, the editor and an author of parts of this book, won the National Book Award for Fiction in 2011 for her novel Salvage the Bones. She begins the book with her hope that:

"this book makes each one of you, dear readers, feel as if we are sitting together, you and me and Baldwin and... all the serious, clear-sighted writers here--and that we are composing our story together. That we are writing an epic wherein black lives carry a worth, wherein black boys can walk to the store and buy candy without thinking they will die, wherein black girls can have a bad day and be mouthy without being physically assaulted by a police officer, wherein cops see twelve-year-old black boys playing with fake guns as silly kids and not homicidal maniacs, wherein black women can stop to ask for directions without being shot in the face by paranoid white homeowners.

I burn, and I hope."

Ms. Ward grew up about an hour from me. She wrote an affecting essay entitled "Cracking the Code," which really made me think about many of us in the United States who don't really know their full ancestry, including me, how this country is truly a melting pot, as it reminded me of how ridiculous and hateful it is that some people still judge others by the color of their skin. In it, she discusses a relatively inexpensive genetic testing company called 23andMe, that she and some other family members used not long ago to find out their ancestry. She grew up as "black" but her dad looked as much Native American as black, and she has relatively light skin for an African-American. Anyway, she talks about how she felt upon finding out that's she's more European than sub-Saharan African; specifically, 40% European-mix of British, Irish, French, German, Scandinavian, Iberian, Italian, and Ashkenazi-- 32% sub-Saharan African, a quarter Native American and less than 1% North African.

Another essay I found particularly thought-provoking, in a book full of poignant essays and verse, was one called "Blacker Than Thou," by Kevin Young, considering the question of Rachel Dolezal:

"It would be one thing...if in her house, to her pillow or family, Dolezal said she felt black... It’s when that somehow translates to what she does, when she teaches black studies as if she’s a black person—not a teacher, but a mind reader—that it becomes a problem. She wears the mask not to hide but to gain authority over the very thing she claims to want to be. How very white of her!"

This anthology has improved my understanding on matters of race and thus effected a change in me. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking to gain different perspectives on race and racial relations in our current political climate.

Powerful and Relevant
By dictionaryfan
This book is a must read for anyone who wants insight into the status of race relations in the US today. It was designed as a response to James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time, which was published in 1962 and is still as relevant today as it was then. While there have been some improvements, there haven't been nearly enough. One of the aspects of the book that I enjoyed was the use of stories and how these demonstrated the strong hold that the past has on our present. Simply because it's behind us doesn't mean that its gone.

Some of the essays in this volume reflect upon the past, while others discuss current events, and a few look to the future. All of the pieces are well-written narratives on the different ways that racism has impacted our culture. Too often we view prejudice as something that happens in other corners of our country, but like the experience that Wendy Walter's described in her essay on looking for one of the oldest negro burial sites in America: we discover that it's right beneath us and we've been driving over it without noticing the whole time.

Note: I was given a free ARC of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3–This tale's classic storytelling structure makes it a natural for storytime. Four days before Halloween, a pumpkin with a "wicked grin" and no other facial features appears in Mrs. McMurphy's hallway. It threatens her, "When my teeth are here, I'll eat you," but she refuses to be cowed and carries it outside. The pumpkin mysteriously reappears inside her house on each of the following days, first with a "crooked nose" to add to the grin, then "two pointy ears," then "two mean eyes." Each time, it repeats its warning and the woman responds by sending it farther and farther away. Finally, on Halloween, the pumpkin returns once more, complete with "large, sharp teeth," and declares that it's ready to eat her. Mrs. McMurphy calmly replies, "We'll have to see about that," and ends up making a pie and serving delicious slices to her trick-or-treaters. Walton uses lots of repetition that invites young listeners to chant along. Done in gouache and acrylics, the folkloric illustrations are dominated by orange tones and filled with wonderful details. This is sure to be a Halloween favorite.–Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY

A very good Halloween story for young children
By youbink
I like the little bit of suspense this book provides for the child without being overly scary. A pumpkin appears one day in Mrs. McMurphy's house , at that time the pumpkin only has a grin and no other facial features. The pumpkin tells her that when he gets his teeth , he is going to eat her. Mrs. McMurphy handles the situation beautifully, and calmly removes the pumpkin from her house .(I love when she boxes the pumpkin and sends it to the North Pole.)But the pumpkin keeps returning, and every time it does , it possesses a new facial feature. As the pumpkin continues to return the suspense builds. Finally the pumpkin returns with his teeth, and Mrs. McMurphy ends up making a pie out of the pumpkin and giving slices of it out to trick or treaters. Nicely illustrated, I love the emerging details on the pumpkin, a nice Halloween story for young children . Just enough suspense to make it a Halloween story without frightening the child too much. I like the way Mrs. McMurphy handles the pumpkin , I think it's good for children to see that you can handle things calmly.

I've read this over 100 times to my kids!
By Sherri
I have a 7 year old and a 16 month old and I am constantly looking for new books for them. This book has become so special to my girls that I had to order a second book so they would each have a copy handed down to them when they get older. The illustrations are colorful and festive and the text is lively and fun. My seven year old likes to plot, while my 16 month old loves the colors and animals in the book.

A book both kids and parents will love!
By 1mom3kids
I agree that this book has just enough suspense to make it a little scary. As a parent, I love it, because it has some parental humor in it as well. For example, when the pumpkin threatens Mrs. McMurphy, first she floats it down a river to get rid of it, and then she mails it to Alaska. It's adorable, and it's a fall favorite for my three kids.

Stevens' latest and best
By Cooljonnorris
I was hoping that this book would be as good as the author's previous two, but I was wrong. It was even better. Stevens is one of the top researchers in the field of hidden Nazi technology, and his two previous books, "Hitler's Flying Saucers," and "Hitler's Suppressed and Still Secret Weapons, Science, and Technology," are must haves in this area, along with Joseph Farrell, Nick Cook, and Igor Witkowski.

This book is written in more detailed fashion than the author's previous books, which were fairly detailed already. He states that this is his last book on this topic, which I hope is not true, as his work is very good and has shed much light on the secret Nazi empire which continues to this day.

Where he departs from Farrell is in his more detailed assessment of the fictions of Wilhelm Landig, which is usually regarded as pro-Nazi hype. Stevens goes to some lengths to show how there is some evidence, although no solid proof, of many of Landig's claims. His analysis is compelling, and there are enough solid bits of evidence to make a reasonable person take notice. The areas of flying machines, atomic research, and submarine development are the main technological arenas focused on in this book. Stevens dishes up quite a bit of solid evidence for technology far in advance of what we are usually told the Nazis developed.

He also goes into quite a bit of depth on Otto Skorzeny, the most visible link between the 3rd Reich and the modern Nazi International. Skorzeny is linked quite openly to current "terrorism," and his movements and activities after the war are covered enough to further shore up Steven's themes in the book.

A must read if you are interested in WW2 history and how it has influenced events which continue to this day.

Highly recommended.

Secrets of WWII and the Cold War Unveiled
By OtherWorlds&Wisdom
Most people, as victims of the public school system, have no idea how vast, all-encompassing and destructive WWII was. That's why nearly 70 years after its end that we still have countless new books chronicling "new" discoveries, events and people of the War. What many historians have been afraid to touch the secret undertakings of the Nazis before, during and after the War. Sure, you have the fanciful fascination in film and novels with their quests for relics and esoteric knowledge. But their scientific endeavors, technology and influence in the Cold War have been often ignored. Why? That last part, the Cold War, that's why. Even as we were putting on trial Nazis and continued to "hunt" them up until the present, we were using others, sometimes setting them free from jail and erasing their past, to contain and fight the Soviets. There's a lot more to the standard "Project Paperclip" story that we are usually told.

Now, decades later, and with the Cold War decades dead, more people are studying this era and its secrets (see The Dead Hand, 15 Minutes, Lab 257, LBJ and the Conspiracy to Kill Kennedy). There is still some trepidation to explore the Nazi end of things by mainstream historians, but that may be changing (Grey Wolf). In part thanks to writers like Stevens (see his Hitler's Flying Saucers and Hitler's Suppressed and Still-Secret Weapons, Science and Technology), it is no longer a "fringe" topic.

In this volume Stevens expands upon and updates his previous books. New material on secret bases and U-boats, the latest on Hitler's UFOS and some insight to what happened after the War. This is an excellent conclusion to his trilogy of books and the best in the series. Since he has began this, others have delved even deeper into this subject (see The SS Brotherhood of the Bell, Reich Of The Black Sun, Roswell and the Reich, etc.) and Stevens here touches on those latest studies. Sure, some is speculation, but why continue to hide the past? Now that the War is long dead and the Cold War quickly becoming (unfortunately) forgotten, it is time for the secrets to be unburied and history set straight. The time for lies and deception is over. Only an open history allows for a prosperous future.

Mr. Stevens: Don't let this be your last book.
By Blue n white collar
Enlightening & riveting as well. The problem is that readers may find it hard to accept the "coded" messages of Wilhelm Landig and Admiral Donitz. I still have to go over Mr. Steven's references to put the whole picture together. As well as Dr. Joseph Farrell, Geoffrey Brooks, Philip Henshall & Friedrich Georg's Hitler's Miracle Weapons. Which Mr. Stevens was a major contributor to. Obviously all of Mr. Steven's work needs to be furthered as more documents surface to the general public for official historical record. The hidden history of Nazi technology is becoming clearer due to Mr. Stevens' books & the German Research Project. Readers must Google that latter title to send away for his catalogue about the vast work that he has amassed. Readers, please check if that catalogue is still availible. Please Mr. Stevens': You've attained a great level of mechanical reference knowledge due to your toil. There's much more work to be revised and refined in this subject. Hopefully, a collaboration will and should occur with any/ all of the aforementioned authors to epitomize all your efforts in this subject.

Once We Were Sisters: A Memoir, by Sheila Kohler

ONE OF PEOPLE MAGAZINE’S BEST NEW BOOKS

“A searing and intimate memoir about love turned deadly.” —The BBC

“An intimate illumination of sisterhood and loss.” —People

When Sheila Kohler was thirty-seven, she received the heart-stopping news that her sister Maxine, only two years older, was killed when her husband drove them off a deserted road in Johannesburg.  Stunned by the news, she immediately flew back to the country where she was born, determined to find answers and forced to reckon with his history of violence and the lingering effects of their most unusual childhood—one marked by death and the misguided love of their mother.

In her signature spare and incisive prose, Sheila Kohler recounts the lives she and her sister led. Flashing back to their storybook childhood at the family estate, Crossways, Kohler tells of the death of her father when she and Maxine were girls, which led to the family abandoning their house and the girls being raised by their mother, at turns distant and suffocating.  We follow them to the cloistered Anglican boarding school where they first learn of separation and later their studies in Rome and Paris where they plan grand lives for themselves—lives that are interrupted when both marry young and discover they have made poor choices.  Kohler  evokes the bond between sisters and shows how that bond changes but never breaks, even after death.

“A beautiful and disturbing memoir of a beloved sister who died at the age of thirty-nine in circumstances that strongly suggest murder. . . . Highly recommended.” —Joyce Carol Oates

Review
“In the end, this is a memoir of love, sorrow, sisterhood and privilege. It’s also a memoir of the limitations of such privilege—in particular, the inescapable tragedy of being born female in a patriarchal world, where all the money, beauty and breeding cannot protect you from a man who takes what he wants without consequence. Rich, pretty, good Maxine, forever the dutiful doll, died young, and her husband lived to a ripe old age, his atrocities never acknowledged. Until now.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“An intimate illumination of sisterhood and loss.”
—People Magazine (Best New Books)

“Kohler digs into her past for a searing and intimate memoir about love turned deadly. . . . Her powerful story gives a sharp contrast between a sister’s lasting love and the ways society protects a violent man.”
—The BBC (Ten Books to Read in 2017)

“It's fitting that the book is written in the present tense, because [Kohler’s] sister is forever with her. Their relationship changes shape yet lingers, as do the important questions about women and violence.”
—Oprah.com (5 Powerful New Memoirs)

“In this intimate, exquisitely written memoir, the author’s first work of nonfiction, she explores the impenetrable bond that can exist between sisters. . . . In spare, delicate prose, Kohler brings a seasoned novelist's skills to this deeply moving, compelling memoir.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Sheila Kohler has written a beautiful and disturbing memoir of a beloved sister who died at the age of thirty-nine in circumstances that strongly suggest murder. Like all of Sheila Kohler’s prose work, Once We Were Sisters reveals its story by degrees, amid a richly sensuous milieu of South African white privilege and repression. It is a tragic tale, with echoes of cultural sexism and misogyny, yet a triumphant story of a young woman’s liberation from this culture and her emergence as a writer. Highly recommended.”
—Joyce Carol Oates, National Book Award-winning author of Them

“Young Sheila Kohler abandons the time-warp of 1950s South Africa and heads for Europe on a voyage of self-discovery. Her quest to find out what it is that she desires—a quest that will last decades and is recounted with the seriousness it deserves, lightened with touches of dry comedy—ends in the discovery that she is and has always been a writer. The most striking parts of this rich and poignant memoir—rich above all in sensual experience—reflect on the necessary cruelty of the writer’s art, sacrificing the truth of the world to the truth of fiction.”
—J.M. Coetzee, author of Disgrace and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature

“Throughout her literary career, Sheila Kohler has obsessively tried to find closure and justice for her sister’s untimely death and, finally, in this memoir she has succeeded in coming to terms with the tragedy by movingly recalling their childhood together and expressing her love for her sister.”
—Lily Tuck, National Book Award-winning author of The Double Life of Liliane

“For unto whom much is given, of him shall be much required: this Biblical verse takes on a tragic ring as this memoir of a privileged childhood ends in murder. Sheila Kohler has put together this heartfelt, suspenseful confession with a lifetime’s worth of skill and an abundance of inborn genius.”
—Edmund White, author of A Boy’s Own Story

“Sheila Kohler's writing is visually potent,  viscerally compelling, and intensely personal. In Once We Were Sisters she conjures a lost world of privilege, violence, and repression that has chilling parallels in contemporary life.”
—Rebecca Miller, author of Personal Velocity

“This lean memoir cuts straight to the heart of what it is to love—and lose—a sister.  Kohler sidesteps nothing; her private rage, regret, heartbreak, and revelation mingle unforgettably with the public shame of apartheid. Once We Were Sisters is an exquisite and devastating book.”
—Tracy K. Smith, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Ordinary Light

“To write a first-rate memoir is to encounter a mystery.  In Sheila Kohler's brilliantly intelligent, beautifully written, sensually detailed, sexy, exquisitely restrained and shocking memoir, there are several mysteries: Why do we act the way we do?  Why are we passive when we should be active, and vice versa?  What does it take for a young woman to find out who she is?  What griefs, what losses must attend that discovery?  How to account for the cruelty and self-indulgence of men, or the willed blindness and guilt of women? 'What is it I have done or failed to do?' the memoirist keeps asking here, and her responses are unfailingly, stringently honest.”
—Phillip Lopate, author of Being With Children

While their father’s great fortune afforded them a life of luxury
By carilynp
Sheila Kohler’s memoir ONCE WE WERE SISTERS is a harrowing account of two extremely close sisters who grew up in Johannesburg in a very privileged family. While their father’s great fortune afforded them a life of luxury, they were lacking in love and attention from their parents, but they had each other.

The author shows us their childhood through being cared for by nannies, servants, then off to boarding and finishing schools. Soon after, both sisters marry young and begin families of their own, with many children between them. Maxine, the older sister, remains in South Africa. Sheila moves to Paris.

The sisters stay in close contact, by traveling to see each other in their respective homes and to other destinations. Simultaneously, the sisters are going through difficulties in their marriages. Sheila learns that her husband is having an affair, which he does not intend to give up. Maxine’s husband, a surgeon, is physically abusing her. And, not just once in a while. Sheila has always been a bit suspicious of him. She tries to intervene by visiting an attorney on her sister’s behalf,  to no avail, and even their mother is also aware of the goings on.

While the memoir opens and we know that her sister has been murdered, 35 years prior to the book being written, it is of course just as disturbing to read about it now. How does her family cope? How does she function in this world without her older sister? Is she able to heal through her writing?

The author takes us back in time and to the present in a stunning way. It is interesting to learn how a fiction writer has woven her pain into her previous work as a way to express her feelings. It was just a challenging subject. I also felt like a helpless bystander. I do think this is one reason that makes reading interesting. It makes you consider aspects of someone else’s situation. As much as I enjoy a memoir, I usually find that there is some sense of closure as the author comes to terms with what propelled them to write or exercise their demons from long ago and come to a realization that they share with their readers. I did not gain anything like that from the book although I was compelled to finish it. My hope is that she was able to find peace.

This book will speak to you!
By writer
I have just read the last page of Once We Were Sisters, and I am sitting in the chair in that submerged state you have when you have just read the last page of a book in which you've been floating. I loved every page, and I feel that I've been spending time with the author in her life. I am very close to my sister Linda, my only sibling, four years younger than I. Because of me, she has become an outspoken supporter of gay rights and has left a church that she felt happy in because they wanted her to sign a paper disavowing gay marriage. All of the people in Once We Were Sisters are now ghosts in the air around me, and I am reluctant to let them go. I have read most of Sheila Kohler's books, and I especially love the last chapter in which she tells us where to find her sister in her other works. Kohler's life has been so different from my own, and yet, where race relations were concerned, a childhood in South Africa, and a childhood in Milledgeville, Georgia, were similar in many ways. And love is love is love. The same with grief. This book is universal, and I have been touched by it.

Masterful
By Reader
The best book I've read in a very long time. Seamless, gorgeously written memoir--spare prose with a subtlety and psychological acuity that renders it far more powerful than a more straightforward approach could have achieved. Kohler, a Sorbonne alum who teaches writing at Princeton, is the award-winning author of fourteen novels, and has outdone herself with this book--an emotional, unconventional murder mystery set against the realities of South Africa, Florence, Paris and New York. Anyone who has a sister (and most who haven't) will be moved to tears by this story, which is all the more powerful because it's true.
