Mood organs. Scramble suits. Poison tongue darts. Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) may have invented more wildly imaginative creations per novel than any of his peers. An eccentric whose mind danced on the blurry edge between illusion and reality, madness and metaphysics, he produced a body of work that no science fiction reader should ignore. Lacked with humor, compassion, irony and paranoia, the four novels n Counterfeit Unrealities are among his best work. What is reality; Who is truly human?
By K. Sozaeva
In this omnibus, some of the Philip K. Dick stories that explore the borders of reality are brought together:
In "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch," Dick works through the nature of reality and illusion. Set in a dystopian future, Earth is going through a "fire" age and humans cannot survive more than a few seconds outside during daylight; this has forced humanity to spend daylight hours in a warren of buildings and tunnels. Additionally, a draft is set up to send humans out to the colonies on Mars and various asteroids - whether they want to or not. These colonies are living at subsistence level and the colonists there invariably end up hooked on a drug called Can-D, that allows them to live in an illusory world populated by Perky Pat and her boyfriend Walt, thereby escaping their miserable existence. They use miniature items to create these worlds; these "mins" are provided by the same company that supplies the illegal Can-D, which is run by Leo Bulero.
When the famous explorer Palmer Eldritch returns from his trip to Proxa, he brings with him some lichen, with which he creates a product called Chew-Z - a legal alternative to Can-D. This is a more potent drug that allows people to create their own universes, without needing the mins. However, what most do not know is that all these universes are controlled by Eldritch. Is Palmer still human, or did something else come back in his place?
Playing onto our worst nightmares - namely those in which we continually think we've awakened, only to find we're still inside the nightmare - this story keeps you guessing as to what is real and what is hallucination. It is difficult to explain too much of the plot without giving away key elements that will spoil the story, which is why I've stuck mainly to what is given in the editorial review or on the book cover. However, I found the story to be very much in the lines of a typical Philip K. Dick story - twisted and convoluted. Well worth the read, however.

In "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?," we find ourselves alternating between two intertwining plot lines. One involves Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter who "retires" escaped androids. The latest model - the Nexus-6 - can only be differentiated from humans through use of a sophisticated psychological testing mechanism that measures empathy levels; empathy being the one thing that androids quite simply lack. The other plot line revolves around J. R. Isadore, a "chickenhead" (that is to say, a man who has mutated enough that he is starting to lose his cognitive abilities, but not so much that he cannot still manage to take care of himself and serve the public in some small way). He works for the Van Ness Pet Hospital, which serves people who own electric animals. However, his day gets off to an uneven start when first he discovers another tenant in his previously empty building, and then he is given a real cat - which subsequently dies on the way in to the hospital before he even realizes it is actually alive.
Similar in theme to "Stigmata," this book explores the differences between reality and fantasy by probing the differences between man and machine(sometimes that line is very blurred), electric animal and real animal, and so forth. Always in the background is the constant back and forth of Mercerism vs. Buster Friendly, who always gently (and sometimes not so gently) accuses Mercer as a fraud and fake.
I found the story enjoyable; dense and difficult at times, but the interchange and interplays are always deft and intriguing. This classic bit of surreal sci-fi is not to be missed.

When reading "Ubik," the first comparison that came to mind was Don DeLilo's White Noise (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century)" Not due to any special thematic comparison, but because of the advertisements for great new products named Ubik at the beginning of each paragraph in the story; this reminded me of the constant low-level onslaught of information that came at you while reading "White Noise."
As far as the story itself - what can one say without spoiling it? The main character is Joe Chip, a tester for the Runciter Group, which is a group of "Anti-psis" - they null out psionic power to help protect people's privacy. I was by stages amused and appalled by the vision of 1992 painted in this novel - apparently we were supposed to have made our way to Mars and the Moon by now, with colonies on each, and we're supposed to be dressing even more outlandishly than we do now. However, it seems odd to me to note the things that are kept in the style of the 50s and 60s. Women are either young and in the service industry or they are matrons and stay at home. If they are other than that, then they are shown as . . . strange, even dangerous, such as Pat Conroy in this story. It is this that makes her such an appropriate foil for Joe Chip, as he stumbles through his attempts to keep the group together after a major fiasco occurs when the Glen Runciter - the owner of the company - takes a group of his most highly skilled workers to the Lunar colony for a job and is there attacked.
The rest of the story shakes down while the surviving characters notice a strange combination of entropy and growth - recession and coming into being. The world seems to be regressing to an older era, but at the same time, they keep getting messages from "beyond" instructing them on what to do. Then the question arises - who is really dead? Who is really alive? What is reality? Who is creating it?
Not for a light evening's read, that's for sure! But well worth the slodge if you have the time. Most intriguing and something to keep the ol' cerebellum stretched. Give it a try.

"A Scanner Darkly" was the most difficult of the stories for me, personally - I'm not quite certain why, but it just didn't hold my interest as much as the others in the omnibus. Telling the story (on the surface) of the deterioration of the undercover narcotics officer "Fred," living as Bob Arctor - due to substance abuse - into paranoia and split personalities when he is told to begin investigating himself intensely (undercover agents wear a "blur" suit and none of them know each other, nor are they aware of whom is who in the field). Additionally, the federal government is seeking the source of Substance D, a deadly and highly addictive drug that invariably leads to burn-out in the case of users. Darkly comical in the earlier parts of the story - and in general any time when Arctor and his friends and roommates are sitting around and shooting the breeze - it is also in its way terribly depressing.

Overall, however, I give a big thumbs up to this omnibus. If you're a fan of Philip K. Dick, obviously you don't want to miss it. If you enjoy fiction that challenges your perceptions of reality, you definitely don't want to miss it!

The best PKD novel collection
By j-c-m
Counterfeit Unrealities, a hardcover omnibus published by the Science Fiction Book Club, contains four of Dick's best novels:

The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Ubik

A Scanner Darkly

While it lacks an introduction, notes, or any other exclusive content, the convenience of a single volume makes this recommended for any reader looking for all four novels.

Great collection. Poor typesetting.
By J. Varnado
This collection of novels by Phillip K. Dick is probably the best single product I have seen to introduce the unfamiliar reader to Dick's work. It contains arguably his best novels in one single hardback edition. As other reviewers have commented on the content of the contained works, I will not speak about that. Over all, the content is certainly deserving of five stars.

However, my problem with this work was the type setting. Perhaps it is just me but the spacing and column width seem to be much to small and I had trouble moving from line to line. But like I said, maybe its just me or my eyesight is going or something.

Also, I think a reader new to Dick's writings would have be better served by a different ordering of the novels. I think I would read them in the order: 1) Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? 2) A Scanner Darkly 3) Ubik 4) The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. But this is just my opinion.

This textbook presumes knowledge of the contents of Spoken Vietnamese for Beginners or an understanding of the basic vocabulary and sentence structures of Vietnamese. Its aim is to build on that understanding through the development of general conversation skills and reading comprehension. The book follows the format of Spoken Vietnamese for Beginners as well: each lesson opens with conversations, a second section explains and gives additional examples of sentence structures and expressions, and a third section offers exercises based on the conversations as well as various readings. A fourth section provides grounding in expanded vocabulary.

The conversations in this textbook revolve around a foreign student coming to Vietnam to study. In the conversations, people share opinions across cultures and ask for information ranging from the practicalities of travel to cultural awareness. The vocabulary covered here touches on health, economics, etiquette, and religion.

The conversations and exercises in this textbook will be made available online as audio files. The book and accompanying audio—an integral component to Contemporary Vietnamese—can be used either with a teacher or for self-study. Language professors and their students—or those learning Vietnamese on their own—will appreciate the accessible approach and manageable size of this textbook.

It arrived with 3 CDs. I threw a cursory glance into the book and found that I need a good start to jump into this highly developped book. Every exercise has its solution given and every vietnamese passage has its translation given on the last pages of the book. Colossal work for vietnamese lovers.

Contemporary Vietnamese: An Intermediate Text (Book + audio) (Southeast Asian Language Text Series)
I am very fortunate in that my current Vietnamese teacher is actually the author of this book, Co Thuan, so I could easily be accused of some bias. However Co Thuan is not only a fabulous teacher, helping me progress more in the last two months then I have in the last year, but her book is interesting, informative and clear, with plenty of examples and exercises. I highly recommend this text to anyone learning Vietnamese - although this is an intermediate text book, Co Thuan has also written a beginner's text in the same style, and further books as you progress. Chuc may man!

great text
By Peter J. Hylton
When I first got this book I was unsure about how effective it would be. After plunging into the first bit of it so far, I've got to say that I'm very impressed. It has a lot of vocab covering diverse situations one would encounter were on to go to Vietnam, though much of the vocab would be useful in many other settings too. For the book to be effective, it just takes a concentration on learning the vocab well, but I must say that for myself I'm very pleased.

There has never been one truth, despite what people claim. Theological ideas have waxed and waned through history, taking conflicting turns with changing leaders, worldviews and political forces. This fast-paced, lay-friendly book, backed by serious, inquisitive scholarship, follows this maze, shining a spotlight into dark corners and dusty shelves to observe ideas silenced and others declared eternal. As many people walk away from churches that are unwilling to face the big questions, this book offers readers permission to think for themselves.

Review
''Val Webb has done it again - bringing God-talk out of both the Academy and the Church; and into the everyday. We are all theologians - God is in our midst and we do not need permission to express what that means to us. This is is a book of liberation in that it allows each one of us to 'do our own theology' - to express what we mean by 'God' and not leave it to the ecclesiastical or scholastic authorities to make up our minds for us. Moreover, as Webb argues, theology has always been what ordinary people declare 'from their heart' about someone/something beyond themselves. This is a brave and challenging book that puts God back in the midst of people - where God belongs!''
--Revd Dr Nigel Leaves, Canon of St John's Cathedral, Brisbane, Australia, author of Encountering God (2014), Religion Under Attack (2011) and The God Problem (2006)

''Val Webb invites us into a broad yet comprehensive sweep of much that has influenced the theological landscape for today's 21st century Christian. In doing so Webb both encourages and provokes our thinking about who we are and what we believe. Above all, the book is a call to the lay people of the church to accept responsibility for their own theological explorations and to no longer be shrinking violets in the important matters of informed faith. I encourage the reading of this book to inform, challenge and provoke good conversations and opportunity for lay and ordained to engage and embrace a 'theology that is life transforming'.''

“TESTING TRADITION and LIBERATING THEOLOGY: FINDING YOUR OWN VOICE
By Richard C. Smith
Dr Val Webb in her latest book “TESTING TRADITION and LIBERATING THEOLOGY: FINDING YOUR OWN VOICE” argues persuasively for Lay people “doing theology”. This is Dr Webb’s 11th book as a well recognised Lay theologian within the protestant tradition of the Uniting Church.
By putting the study of theology into it historical context, Dr Webb’s book should be mandatory for all contemplating serious theological study. It is comprehensive with chapters covering the definitions and history of theology through the last 2000 years. It is particularly valuable because of its autobiographical thread which covers Dr Webb’s own lay theological journey of discovery from the early certainties of an evangelical faith to the doubts that modernity and post-modernity throws at us. This brings Dr Webb’s book into the heart of contextual theology. Covered are Church, liberation, feminist, process and ecological theologies that emerge out of this approach. Such contextual theology I have found invaluable in sustaining my Christian faith through many difficult situations throughout my personal and professional life.
As the title of the book suggests Dr Webb does not avoid the challenges facing the Church in constructing a syllabus for “lay theological education” that balances the claims of supernatural versus natural revelation. In particular, the view of ordination that developed in church history but was challenged by the Reformation where the passing of the apostolic succession by the laying on of hands granted a special privilege. A privilege which often consigned the Laity to second class status in theological discourse.
For example Dr Webb states that “- it always amazes people to discover that neither “Fall” nor “Sin” is mentioned in the Genesis story of Adam and Eve” (Page 170), as the Church’s doctrine of “Original Sin” arises out of St Augustine’s contextual theologising of his struggles with his youthful sexual misadventures. The surprise comes when one discovers that the first biblical reference to “Sin” actually comes when God warns Cain: “ …. Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it." (Genesis 4:7b). Cain does not resist, murders his brother and in the subsequent narrative, Sin is defined as not just violence but “escalatory violence”. This I find a more useful and biblically based theology for the global human and ecological violence that confronts us today.

Theology - a task for everybody
By Amazon Customer
I found this book very helpful in understanding (and justifying!) my own religious journey. It also has a wealth of information that is very clearly explained.

Val Webb speaks directly to the readers in "Testing Tradition", calling us to work out our own theology. I just hope that your book will be read by the unconvinced outside the current progressive Christian audience. I learned a lot about how what is said to be what the church believes/teaches is, in fact, either quite recent or just a swing of the pendulum back to an earlier emphasis. You made some arcane theological disputes very clear - I had not seen before how the concept of the trinity came from the need for an efficacious Eucharist, coupled with Greek dualistic views. Your talk of the growth of clericalism and the deligitimisation of the laity from any theological role was very clear and powerful. It certainly lines up with my recent (and failed) experience in the local church.

By Thoburn F Thompson
In a time of increasing polarity in religious and political life, Val Webb's "Testing Tradition and Liberating Theology" is a gentle but persuasive aid for us who are questioning doctrine and power systems. Her chapter progression and generous use of meaty quotations from all ages is excellent. I especially found her call for 'theological hospitality' challenging The book is ready for use as a study guide or book review. She calls for 'doing theology', which invites lay persons to examine personally, or in a group that listens to one another, the many theologies beyond a dominant christian one, therefore liberating theology, as in the title. The context of experience (as also tradition, scripture, and reason) leads the reader to "do theology". Clergy should welcome, review and share this readable book with their peers and engage lay persons who are uncomfortable in an atmosphere of rigid traditions. A book to share!!

He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. A Dystopian worth Diving Into.
By Robin Snyder
Dystopian novels seem to be a dime a dozen lately, some good, some horrible, so it is great to see a book set itself apart and really capture my imagination. Red Rising is a combination of The Hunger Games and Lord of the Flies if you turned the volume up to 11.

-- I am the spark that will set the worlds afire. I am the hammer that cracks the chains.

The beginning was a little predictable, I mean to create a man with an epic quest there must be a great injustice done to him. Darrow is that boy/man, while most boys of seventeen but he has seen and been through too much to be a boy any longer. Married to his childhood sweetheart Eo at sixteen he works for his clan mining underground on Mars so the planet can be terraformed for future generations. He works hard to provide for them but it seems that they are destined to be low forever. Eo has dreams to make their lot in life better for Darrow to stand up and rebel but he wants nothing except her.

-- “You think a dream is worth dying for. I say it isn’t. You say it’s better to die on your feet. I say it’s better to live on our knees.”

When Darrow finds out his entire life has been a lie, that mars is already terraformed and has been for generations he is recruited to rebel against the system by transforming from a lowly Red into a Gold, the rulers of the worlds who believe themselves to be Gods among men. Now he must infiltrate their system and become the best Gold possible so that in the future he can destroy them from the inside.

Red Rising is dark and intense, full of intrigues and betrayals. Even though the beginning is predictable the rest of the book is not. Just when I start to feel comfortable with the characters and the roles they are playing the rug gets pulled out from under me and I have a very new understanding of the game and the society that constructed it. No one is safe and no one is what they seem.

I loved some of the side characters, there are so many that are slightly off. It could be because they are brilliant but it could also be because they are crazy, perhaps both. Servo was one of my favorites and I was never quite sure what that guy was going to pull next.

-- “I killed their pack leader,” Servo says when I ask why the wolves follow him. He looks me up and down and flashes me an impish grin from beneath the wolf pelt. “Don’t worry, I wouldn’t fit in your skin.”

Brown has given us glimpses into a vast and complicated world. We have only seen a small part of it so far but what I’ve seen is dark, cruel and intricate. Throughout the story Darrow stumbles and falls but the transformation of him from the beginning of the story to the end was amazing and you get to see every misstep and mistake along the way to make you believe the transformation. I can’t wait to see how Brown follows Red Rising up. Definitely a dystopian worth diving into.

Perfect for Scifi & Hunger Games Fans!
By Deanna Reads Books
Red Rising is a book that everyone kept telling me to read, but I just kept putting it off, or I got stuck between review books and I could never fit it in. I was hoping to get to it so I could review it for last Sci-Fi November, but alas I just couldn't get to it until now.

I loved the beginning of this novel. The bleak life and hardship that the Reds face is so clearly mapped out. I really got a good feel for what life and culture was like for the Reds. I love a good sci-fi novel with a class struggle, so I was hooked from the beginning. The book takes a turn once Darrow gets mixed up in the revolution and finds out that everything he had ever been told was a lie. I found Darrow's physical transformation super interesting, and watching him try to change himself and struggle so hard with that was one of the things that I loved about this novel. It's something that I was glad that he constantly conflicted with throughout the novel. He had to find a way to appear like a Gold, but without losing his identity as a Red in the process. Not an easy thing to do, and I like that we saw Darrow not always succeed with this.

I will admit, I do feel like at times the pacing got a little too slow for me. Once Darrow is in the battlefield, parts of that just got too slow and boring for me. A lot of what happens at this point in the book is really important to Darrow's mission, so a lot of it was integral to the overall plot but...some of it just dragged on way too much. I was like, "I get it, can we just finish this battle now?"

Darrow was an interesting character to read about. I felt like he read more like an adult, which I think was fine in this case because he was a Red that had already had a wife and grew up a lot quicker than the Golds he was surrounded by. Dude was straight up diabolical at the end as he systematically started to take out all the big bads to win favor in the battlefield. While, I really enjoyed this, at times I thought he was super reckless! Like when they were forging his name into the institute and he refused to go by a Gold-like name and insisted on keeping his Red-name. I thought that was a really stupid plan, and I'm actually surprised more people weren't suspicious of him. He also makes a lot of bad decisions in the battlefield, even if he is trying to do the best for everyone. I really liked that about him, because although he seemed like this amazing hero, he also had a lot of flaws and sometimes he just failed. Sometimes it's okay to fail.

I think a lot of the characters in this novel were written really well. Some are just there to be background characters, which I think is pretty obvious, but Mustang and Sevro have to stand out the most from the other characters. I loved that Sevro was such a little psycho! I also liked that he was just so loyal to Darrow. He didn't ask questions, he just made sure things got done. I also really liked that we never knew what was with Mustang until the very end. I was real cautious of her the entire book, as I wasn't sure what her angle was. I'm still not entirely sure she still isn't just playing the game, and that's what made her so interesting!

I liked this book a lot, and I'm kind of mad that I didn't read it sooner! I would definitely recommend this for fans of The Hunger Games or Sci-fi fans in general.

The characters are so strong and I really enjoyed reading about them
By Rebecca S
I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. After the first part, I thought it was okay, but as it progressed I realized how special it was. This book is more complex than any of the other dystopian/YA books I've read. The characters are so strong and I really enjoyed reading about them. Though the book got darker and gorier than I thought it would be, it really worked. I kept forgetting that most of the characters were teenagers, as they became sneaky scheming warriors. Darrow becomes a completely different person throughout the book and I hope as the series progresses he finds himself again, because right now he is a rare filled almost monster. I hope we learn more about the other "colors" because I think that's such an interesting aspect of this world. I can't wait to read the next one!
