For instance, in the chapter on the modern state, the authors include such data as each state's year of establishment, its failed state ranking, its government revenue as percentage of GDP, and its rating on the corruption perception index-all important measures of each state's size and nature. Introducing Comparative Politics is a very user friendly and comprehensive text with an innovative design. It combines a very useful degree of theory and defining concepts with interesting case studies. Its special strength is to interweave the case studies within each chapter, such that the issues are highlighted instead of just the political history. Very good design, middling execution

I assigned this text for my comparative politics course because I've been very dissatisfied with the way comparative politics texts are generally designed. Most focus either on concepts and theories or on "cases", where the cases amount to a chapter-length discussion of the entire political history of some country. Instructors generally have to combine both books, and never have enough time to get through all of them. Students are also stuck learning a lot of historical facts that aren't directly related to the core concepts of comparative politics (E.g. "What was the name of the dynasty ruling China in 500 BCE?"). What is needed is a text that teaches the concepts while applying them to short, focused cases (where the cases are events, regimes, political figures or organizations, not whole countries), making all kinds of comparisons along the way.

That's what the Drogus and Orvis text does. A lot of the cases are great, with some from smaller less "important" countries (like Tanzania, the Philippines, and South Korea). Several of the conceptual chapters are also high-quality. The chapters on the state, the varieties of democracy, and on political institutions are the best I think; in general the discussions of political economy are the weakest and are overly narrow. There are also some glaring factual mistakes and bad charts. For example on p. 330 there's a meaningless chart which purports to show that Iran actually scores better on democracy and human development than the Middle East average. A small distinction if deserved, but the info in the chart actually doesn't support the claim. In the political economy section as well I found that some claims were outdated or just wrong (e.g. saying that Brazil's "recent" economic growth has been weak).

When my students shell out $80 for a text, I want them to trust the information presented, and I hope some of them keep the book for reference. But when publishers don't do a thorough job of fact-checking (and even basic copy editing) you can hardly blame students and teachers from feeling ripped off. This is not to pick on this text or specifically on CQ. This is a problem with many textbook publishers. I'll keep using this text, but I'll hope later editions are better.

Undoubtedly One Of The Best Self Improvent Books Of All Time

Truly an amazing book for those in a self discovery phase of their lives. This book is a super simple and quick read giving the illusion that it isn't filled with wisdom that will resonate with you for years to come. Nothing could be further from the truth. Beautifully written in a way that almost anyone can relate to, the book does an excellent job of opening your mind and helping you realize that wherever you are is okay. In the vein of many Buddhist texts, the idea is to be in the moment so that you can fully appreciate your life (gross oversimplification but you get the point) but instead of Dan Millman just preaching this to you, he tells a beautiful story through the eyes of a college gymnast who thinks he has it all figured out. This college gymnast happens upon a man named Socrates who very quickly informs him that he doesn't know anything. Socrates then goes on to teach him many lessons on happiness and how to be in life for real deep fulfillment and it is a story that may very well leave you in tears. The book is fantastic, just do yourself a favor and read it.

I am always on the prowl for books with a self-help theme and a philosophical approach. Most of the time these are non-fiction books; however, sometimes they can also be a fiction story, which is exactly what this book (Way of the peaceful warrior: a book that changes lives by Dan Millman) is all about. Surprisingly, this esoteric book turned out to be a unique approach to living a full and meaningful life.

The author (Dan Millman) relates a personal mystical experience and a meeting with a man who Dan calls Socrates or Soc for short. Dan is in college at the time and is also world champion gymnast athlete and one night when he could not sleep he wound up at a small all-night gas station. This is where he meets a man working the night shift who becomes his philosophical and spiritual mentor.

The unique and original approaches to learning about what is really important in life are the lessons Dan is taught in sometimes subtle and unusual ways. The numerous conversations and feedback between Dan and Socrates makes this 217 page soft cover an interesting read. I had heard about this book some time ago but did not read it until recently. There also was a movie made based upon this book.

This book is organized into three books. Book one covers “the winds of change.” Book two is about “the warrior’s training.” The final book (3) is about the final search and the gate opens. There is also information about the movie being made from the book.

Even though I enjoyed reading this book I have some disagreements with some of the esoteric approaches in this book; nevertheless, I felt it was good enough to give 5 stars.

I’ve waited too long to give this book a review. It is a book I have already read two times and will read again soon. More about mindset, and I love how the author gives you a journey as if it were you (well it was him) from being a “untamed” mind, into someone who has the discipline to “control their life and outlook”. So many of us are sitting back waiting for things to come to us, and complaining about our lives.

Wish more people would read this book, on a regular basis I think of myself in the shoes of the main character in the book and try to develop my mindset to be more in control and positive of the situation.

"A Bride For Donnigan" was one of the better books by Janette Oke, and started out very interesting. But, there are some hills of good and bad. First off, I found everything too perfect and sugar coated. What are the odds of Donnigan and Kathleen getting along? Much less, falling in love? It might happen, but it would take time. Which leads me into how Oke didn't express how much time goes by, nor the age of Donnigan. We don't know much of anything about Donnigan. Towards the end, the total point of this book was gone. I was hoping for more about their marriage, and the trials and tribulations of it. I did enjoy the characters, nonetheless, and did care about their outcome, but Donnigan seems too good to be true. I'm also glad that a book was finally written about this subject, even if it was just a storybook romance. It still doesn't beat "Roses For Mama," but is good all the same. I recommend.

This is my sixth Janette Oke book to read. This book, hands down,is the best Oke book thus far. Characterization is developed to the point that you can feel the nervousness both of the main characters (Donnigan and Kathleen) experience as they made the decision to sign up and follow through with the idea of the mail order bride. You can feel the anxiety Kathleen experienced with the haystack fire and also with the loss of Taryn. Donnigan's search for God's plan of salvation was thought-provoking as we take the presence of churches / Bibles / pastors as a way of life. Interspersed throughout the book were bits of humor and wit. "A Bride for Donnigan" is an all round great book.

Mostly Run-of-the-Mill Arrangements

Most of the arrangers in this book are younger composers just starting out. Many of them also contributed to Gospel Gold: Sacred Treasures for Piano, Simply Beautiful, and Music of the Masters for the Master. I didn’t like the arrangements in this book as much as I did Gospel Gold, Vol. 2 or Simply Beautiful. Too many of them seem like run of the mill arrangements that didn’t make the cut in another book. There are a few exceptions, of course. I did very much like James Koert’s rhythmic version of “Come, Thou Fount”. And my favorite work from this book is Pamela M. Robertson’s “Lead On, O King Eternal”. This piece is an original, imaginative arrangement done in 5/4 time.
The arrangements are:
