Fascinating glimpse at the "men" behind the curtain

Health care continues to limp on in the United States. We are ranked 46th out of all the Top 50 nations for health care in the world. Part of the issue is that health care is run like any other business and yet it isn't truly a business--profiting on someone's else's health or denying coverage for a pre-existing condition (or stating that a technique is experimental when, in fact, it isn't so as to deny coverage and keep the patient alive)is a form of gambling but it gambles with people's lives which makes it Wendell Potter worked for what he would probably characterize as the "enemy" now for over twenty years. As a PR executive he would weave lies into a positive "truth" for the company he worked for (Cigna) making it appear that they were always doing the right thing for their patients. Using statistics to lie is one thing (for example dropping people off the unemployment rolls that are reported to make it appear that the nation is covering when it isn't)but Potter would often twist the truth or help craft messages to appeal to middle America to scare the public from reform in health care.

One day Potter had an awakening and realized what he was doing was wrong leaving the industry that had nurtured him and becoming an advocate for proper health care and a government based system to force corporations to play fair. He just couldn't stomach hiding greed behind the veneer of double speak falling into a rabbit hole with language that only George Orwell would recognize. He chronicles his rise in the industry and his disillusionment and how the media is manipulated, patients, government to make decisions that are profiting major corporations at the cost of our health and lives. This is as much the story of his awakening as it is about the PR manipulation of the public around health care issues and trying to demonize the discussion of universal healthcare as part of the debate.

Potter's exceptional book "Deadly Spin" takes us behind-the-scenes into the wheeling and dealing that goes on with multiple PR flacks that try and spin doctor any change that threatens their profit as bad for the average consumer. Potter gives us a history of the PR game to help us understand WHY and HOW this is unethical (especially by the ethics guidelines dicated by the PR association).

The health care industry from health plans to pharmaceuticals have for too long had access to lawmakers (using the money that we pay them) to push forward their own agenda and "buy" politicians in Washington; that's nothing new it just just become more blatant than before. Using misinformation, front groups to suggest that any sort of reform is bad, these organizations have been directing America down a path with overgrown foilage and rough terrain where the patient must always suffer. Potter's book takes the curtain that these companies hide behind and let's us see the thought process, innner workings and how misinformation manipulates the public to make the wrong choices while allowing politicians to make those choices knowing they are wrong without ramifications.

Is "Universal Healthcare" the way to go? I don't know but I do know that the insurance industry is scared of it. Potter points out how people like him would manipulate the media and politicians to paint Universal Healthcare as "communist" or "socialist" in nature to taint any and all intelligent discussion about the positives and negatives scaring people away before dialog had even begun.

Potter suggests that having some sort of system like this in place would be helpful in redefining the way we take care of our health. The recent changes with Obama Care he points out aren't perfect but is a step in the right direction (--his complaint was that corporate America shaped it (this is Potter's opinion mind you I don't know that I agree with him on this point but it is food for thought).

I don't know that I agree with all of Potter's suggestions (for example I think that given our economy Obama Care should have been a lower priority--right in the middle of the worst economic downturn in ages-- and when it did become a priority it was so badly compromised that the changes--small as they were and some positive--are meaningless in the over all big picture)but I have to admire him for waking up from the money inspired opiate-like dream that has entranced everyone else in his former industry. I also feel that Potter would have done better to give us more in depth examples of why the system breaks down consistently but what we do get is pretty embarrassing.

Regardless of where you stand on healthcare-- if you believe or don't believe in universal healthcare--Potter's book is essential reading for understanding the flaws in our system and how corporate profit continues to dictate who gets coverage, who doesn't and why we are ranked so poorly compared to other nations when it comes to health care.

Should be required reading for every member of Congress

The title of this book, "Deadly Spin: An Insurance Company Insider Speaks Out on How Corporate PR is Killing Health Care and Deceiving Americans" is a bit off-putting. Reading it, I mentally prepared myself for a diatribe written by a disgruntled low-level employee out to get his pound of flesh. We all know that health insurance companies are in the habit of denying coverage and raising premiums, occasionally exorbitantly, but they aren't all that bad, right? Surely not as bad as the Wall Street firms that first took away our retirement savings and then our jobs.

I worked in the financial industry for 25 years. Nothing I saw there was as heinous as what is revealed in this book. Put simply, Wall Street may take away people's money, but health insurance companies take away people's lives.

Author Wendell Potter was an insurance company executive, heading up a PR department. For years, he participated in the shameless pursuit of profits over lives until he finally came face to face with the effects on real people of what he was doing. Visiting a clinic set up on a fair ground offering free health care to those who had no insurance and no means to pay for health care, he saw ordinary hardworking people reduced to being treated in animal stalls.

He has written about his experience in the health insurance industry, as well as his epiphany, in a straightforward manner, making it more powerful than if he had penned an hysterical screed. He takes us, step by step through the changes in the health insurance industry from a privately held companies offering true health insurance to the modern publicly owned companies whose focus is on profits rather than health.

The lengths to which health insurers go and the collusions in which they participate are extraordinary. They routinely deny coverage to people who need it and drop coverage of people who become ill. They hire outside PR firms who form bogus grassroots groups who lobby in favor of health insurers. They provide statistics to back up all of their false claims that any kind of healthcare reform is bad.

Potter devotes an entire chapter to revealing how health insurers torpedoed Healthcare Reform using all of the dirty tricks he had discussed in previous chapters. The reason we have no public option is because it would put the health insurance industry out of business prompting them to wage all-out war against it.

It took the death of a child who was denied a liver transplant to convince Potter to leave his job with CIGNA. He devotes his time now to healthcare reform advocacy and as a health insurance critic. He testified during the healthcare reform debates, but obviously not enough people listened to him.

In my opinion, this book should be required reading for every member of Congress. They need to know how they have been bribed and manipulated by the health insurers to do what's best for the health insurance industry instead of what is best for the people who elected them to office.

Good Summary of Health Care Insurance Issues

Wendell Potter was formerly in charge of public relations for Humana and then Cigna. Potter's intent in "Deadly Spin" is to expose the deceptive techniques of public relations in the insurance segment of health care. He does this quite well, and also provides readers with insight into the two events (the large turnout, including many with illusionary health insurance, for a free Pennsylvania dental and medical clinic; the death of a young girl after his employer dithered and delayed approving a necessary transplant) that turned him against continuing to defend the industry he had been part of for some 25 years. Potter begins by introducing readers to a sampling of tested phrases that have served the industry quite well, such as 'socialized medicine,' 'government-run' medicine, and 'government takeover' of medicine. Readers also gain exposure to other P.R. favorites, such as identifying with patriotism and the American way of life, testimonials, name-calling, smearing opponents (eg. Michael Moore and his "Sicko"), identification with plain folks, fake grassroot campaigns, junk science and statistical analyses, and euphemisms. A brief tour of the darker side of health insurance practice likewise is given - rescissions (retroactively canceling policies of those with large medical bills, using whatever pretext possible), and purging less than profitable accounts via large rate increases. Missing, however, is any comment on the fact that if the uninsured paid the same rates as insurance companies, much of the need for health insurance would go away, and a large proportion of medical bankruptcies avoided.

Universal health coverage began under Germany's Otto Von Bismarck in 1883, with Social Security following in 1889. The motivation was neither altruism or socialism, but to provide leverage against the labor and socialist movements of the day. Health insurance quickly spread - Austria (1888), Hungary (1891), Norway (1909), England (1911), Russia (1912), and the Netherlands (1913). Unfortunately, the momentum took almost 100 years to get to the U.S.

Some of the most disturbing revelations in "Deadly Spin" are that 'ObamaCare' is not a 'cure-all.' For example, it will not stop employers from only offering high-deductible plans such as the $30,000 for some families in Maine. Nor does it remove the ERISA liability protection for employer-sponsored plans. However, it will sharply reduce medical bankruptcies, the key reason for 62% of personal bankruptcies in 2007. Hopefully, it will also reduce the amounts paid for executive salaries and retreats - WellPoint spent over $27 million on staff retreats in 2007-08, while William McGuire, United Health CEO for 12 years, was paid almost $2 billion for his leadership ($620 million was 'clawed-back' because of fraudulent option back-dating). (Comparison: Dr. Donald Berwick, an extremely well-regarded expert in charge of care for the 103 million receiving Medicare or Medicaid, receives only $176,000/year.) Hopefully, the $52.4 billion spent on stock buybacks instead of medical care by the 7 largest insurers from 2003-08 will also either cease or be drastically diminished.

An important side effect of our market-based health-care system is the very high administrative overhead - about 31%, per some estimates, compared to 3% for Medicare. Duplicity and high lobbying costs are two more - America's health insurance plans donated $86.2 million to the U.S. Chamber's lobbying against 'ObamaCare' in 2009, while promising President Obama on tape that they were in support.

Mr. Potter is unquestionably qualified and sincere in his effort. Unfortunately, limiting the scope to his personal expertise both enormously understates the size of America's health care problem, and unfairly skews the focus towards insurance firms. The U.S. spends 17.3%+ of GDP on health care, despite not covering some 40-50 million. Compare that to competitors Japan (about 7.2%), Taiwan (about 6%), and China (4%). Reducing our expenditures to Taiwan's level would save about $1.7 trillion/year, and also reduce unfunded Medicare and other health care liabilities for retirees by close to $30 trillion. Most of the problem is due to excessive service charges (about 2X those of other nations), and excessive utilization by profit-maximizing physicians. Solutions require not just Potter's recommendations for limiting monopolistic practices by health care insurers (providers are also guilty) and mandating higher MLRs, but also restructuring health care to combine insurance and care provision in the manner of Kaiser Permanente (California), the V.A., the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Bassett Health Care, and Geisinger Health System. Physicians must be predominantly paid by salary, to discourage excess care. It will also require that the U.S. emulate every other developed nation that I'm aware of by mandating strict price-controls for medical services, and limiting the ability of drug makers to mislead patients and providers with overly expensive 'new' products that are no better than existing ones.

About the Author

Marge Lial has always been interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College. Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and�fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

David Schneider has taught mathematics at universities for over 34 years and has authored 36 books. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. During most of his professional career, he was on the faculty of the University of Maryland--College Park. His hobbies include travel, dancing, bicycling, and hiking.

Callie Daniels has always had a passion for learning mathematics and brings that passion into the classroom with her students. She attended the University of the Ozarks on an athletic scholarship, playing both basketball and tennis. While there, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education as well as the NAIA Academic All-American Award. She has two master’s degrees: one in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Missouri-Rolla, the second in Adult Education from the University of Missouri- St. Louis. I am very displeased because this EXPENSIVE textbook didn't even come with the access code to do my homework. Now I've got to shell out $85 more on top of the cost of this book, the description needs to be more specific.

Current college student taking College Algebra

I STRONGLY suggest you RENT this textbook. I rented it for around $25 from an Amazon marketplace seller. Unless you are a math major and love to collect math books, do yourself a favor - save some money and just rent this textbook. The suggested retail price of this textbook is insane, even used it is insanely expensive. Just rent the textbook, it will save you a ton of cash. Plus you won't have the burden of selling a used textbook, that you most likely will not get all of your money back out of. RENT IT!

I am currently taking College Algebra at my local community college, one night a week. I graduated high school in 2002, went to college for several years, but have yet to successfully complete college algebra (had to drop the class twice). I have always struggled with math, especially Algebra. I am a visual learner. Once I see a problem worked, either in person or in a book, I will understand it.

With this textbook, I am really struggling to understand some of the exercises. Some of the exercises are not thoroughly explained in the review. How can they expect you just to learn how to solve for H, with the area of a trapezoid using a linear equation - if they don't give an example? I honestly hate how textbooks do this! Now, my instructor only assigns a handful of odd numbered exercises. I of course complete the required exercises, but on my own - I work the rest of the exercises, even and odd. This textbook only provides the answers for the odd numbered problems. There is an issue with the answers in the back of the book, the sections are literally separated! For example, there are answers to "Solutions to Selected Exercises" for chapter 1.1 on page S-3. Then there are "Answers to Selected Exercises" for chapter 1.1 on page A-3. Why they separated these answers/solutions, whatever they want to call them, is beyond me. It can be confusing, how do you know if it is going to be in the Solutions or Answers section? I can not offer any advice other than to get you some 3M tabs and mark both sections. That way you will at least be able to differentiate the two sections easily.

So for you students that are like me and really want to learn the material, for the knowledge and the grade, I STRONGLY SUGGEST you purchase or rent the 10th EDITION ANNOTATE INSTRUCTOR'S EDITION (ISBN 978-0321501486). The Instructor's Edition contains all the answers to the even and odd numbered exercises. The answers are contained in the back of the textbook (solution and answers are in separate sections too) and the answers are also in the margin on the actual page. So, on page 89 - the answers to exercises 17-58 are in the margins. It is important for me to mention that the so far, from what I have seen, the material and exercises are the same (only reviewed up to section 1.4 so far). There are nine noted differences in the preface of the 11th edition. Some mention that there are new diagrams, new art graphics, some new exercises, etc. I have not yet found any of these differences, but I am sure I will. The most noteable difference between the 10th and 11th editions, is the size. The 11th edition is larger.

If you struggle even a little with College Algebra, get your required textbook for class AND get the Instructor's Edition to keep at home. I choose to have the required textbook because I want to literally be on the same page as my instructor and classmates. I choose to keep the Instructor's Edition at home because 1) I don't want to be bombarded with questions from anyone on what it is, 2) I don't want anyone to think that I am cheating, 3) I don't want to give anyone any reason to report me as cheating on the tests. So if you do purchase the instructor's edition, consider keeping it at home. If you are an online student, still get the book you are required to have. Point is, just use the Instructor's Edition as a supplement to check your answers.

Next item is the Student Solutions Manual, ISBN 9780321791382 - RENT IT! This textbook provides the SOLUTION to the odd numbered exercises. It doesn't just provide the answer, it details what the solution is that results in the answer. This will help you understand the exercises that the textbook never reviewed. I have rented this textbook as well. This an excellent resource to have at home to check your answers. If you have answered an exercise wrong, you can check the solution to see what you did wrong. I have used solutions manuals just like this before, they saved me from worrying about if I got a exercise wrong or not. This book, I will take to class with me. This is specifically published for students to use. Keep in mind, if you rented your 11th edition textbook, you only need to rent the Student Solutions Manual (if it is cheaper to buy instead of rent, do that).

Poorly written and organized book

THE 2 OUT OF 5 IS FOR THE AUTHORS OF THIS BOOK AND NOT THE SELLER. I dont like this book at all. The examples are super easy, and the examples are completely different. You will get really really frustrated with this book be warned. Get the solutions manual. Between the solutions manual and youtube, I was able to figure it out. Often, really important details are casually buried in a paragraph of text when it should have been highlighted. Poorly written and organized book but it's for college so had to get it.

From a student's perspective

I am very glad that I discovered this book - I never knew that the Balkan Math Olympiad had such beautiful problems! I have since spent countless hours working on these problems.
What distinguishes this book from the BMO contests forum page on AoPS is the quality of the solutions and diagrams. Each problem is provided with at least one solution; all are complete and easy to follow. Often times the solutions show you an alternative method to the way you solved it and it is very satisfying. Furthermore, all geometry problems are supplied with really helpful diagrams that simplify the problem greatly. I have truly enjoyed this useful book and recommend it to anyone who is preparing for Math Olympiads.

Excellent contribution to the Maths Competition literature

This book is written by two experienced and wise hands from the mathematical olympiad circuit. In common with most international competitions, the problems and associated solutions are also available at the Art of Problem Solving website.

The advantage of using this excellent book rather than the AoPS site are that (a) the quality of the solutions is excellent, and you don't have to trawl through material wondering which suggested solutions are correct and which are flawed, (b) it is very handy to have these problems analyzed in one place and (c) the quality of the diagrams in the book is excellent.

The standard of the problems at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad is a bit easier than the IMO and the Romanian Master of Mathematics. On the other hand, the harder problems are more challenging than one finds in most national mathematical olympiads (except for those countries with a very strong mathematics competition tradition).

Who needs this book? Well, anyone preparing to sit a national mathematical olympiad (in the UK, BMO round 2) and anyone hoping to compete in a secondary (high) school international (regional or global) mathematics competition will enjoy this book. It would make an ideal birthday or Christmas (or culturally equivalent) present for a strong young mathematician. I urge schoolteachers who work in mathematically strong schools to make sure that this is held in the school library.

This book presents 120 problems given at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad between
1984 and 2013. These are high quality Olympiad problems, which are little known outside
the space of the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad, as I could see myself during the
training of the US International Mathematical Olympiad Team. The problems originate
in a part of the world (Eastern Europe) with a long tradition in mathematics competitions.
The difficulty level of the problems is slightly below the International Mathematical Olympiad,
and on par with the national mathematical Olympiads of strong countries, and so this material
can be used by people training for such competitions.

The book is a true gem, as it presents very detailed and carefully written solutions.
The authors have put a lot of effort to make this book attractive to the reader,
both in contents and in appearance. What I particularly like is that most of the
problems are given more than one solution, allowing the reader to
"dominate" the problem. Because of this, some of the problems can make good
topics for math clubs and math circles.

The authors of the book are famous posers of Olympiad problems
and coaches of Olympiad teams. I have met them at various mathematical
events around the world, I have read their publications, and I can say that
they are true ambassadors of elementary mathematics. We are fortunate
to have them share some of their insights with us in this book.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in problem solving at
elementary level.

About the Author
Francesco Petrarch (1304-1374), scholar and man of letters, is considered the father of sonnet-writing. Although the majority of his work was composed in Latin, it is his collection of poems in the vernacular entitled 'Canzoniere' for which he is most remembered. Anthony Mortimer holds the Chair of English Literature at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and has been a Visiting Fellow at Merton College, Oxford. Publications include 'Petrarch's Canzoniere in the English Renaissance'

a good translation in a poorly designed ebook

Although I would Anthony Mortimer's translation of Petrarch, Penguin has done a poor job of adapting the text for Kindle. There's only a minimal table of contents. But the most annoying problem is the way the Italian and English versions are presented. Instead of showing the Italian version of a poem in its entirety, and then the English version, sometimes this book presents the first few stanzas in Italian and then English. In other words, if you're reading the English translation, the book will switch back to the Italian version mid-poem. This means you have to scroll ahead, looking for where the English translation begins again.

Again, Mortimer's translation is readable. It has a lyrical but contemporary quality. The problem with this ebook is with its format (or lack of it).

Wonderful collection, but I would still look to either the original Italian or bilingual collections of the complete work. One can get lost in the world Petrarch evokes as he pursues his poetic journey which also is a spiritual one as well.

Lauri Keller, the much-applauded creator of the wacky, wonderful The Scrambled States of America, traces one school day in a classroom of teeth in Open Wide: Tooth School Inside. Fortunately, when Dr. Flossman takes attendance, all 32 teeth are present to take the pledge: "And to the gums on which we stand, strong and healthy, with toothbrushes and toothpaste for all." The day proceeds with an anatomy lesson (illustrating dentin, enamel, pulp, etc.), which is interrupted only momentarily when Carl Canine badmouths a little molar (hurting his feelings even though he has a hard enamel shell on the outside). Sally Incisor then shares her report on primary teeth ("Babies don't even need teeth. You never see them eating corn on the cob or anything"), and the Tooth Fairy makes a guest appearance, offering molar-coaster rides and bemoaning the whole "under-the-pillow" idea, which causes her to fear suffocation.

Lunch is a messy affair--complete with food fights--and when it is over, none of the teeth feel like brushing. Of course, an in-depth lesson on tooth decay and cavities ignites a flurry of flossing, gargling, and brushing. As in Scrambled States (which is a must-see if you haven't yet read it), every clever, colorful collage bubbles with activity, hilarious asides between the teeth, and tiny details that you may miss the first time through. Two quizzes conclude the book, posing questions such as "George Washington had teeth made out of rocks and twigs. T or F" and "Tooth decay is caused by a) bacteria and germs, b) slugs and worms, c) bad perms." While, in her first book, the states themselves delivered the facts in fun-filled chatty exchanges, here the teacher drills into his anthropomorphic pupils a smattering of tooth truths, including the physical composition of teeth, the function of primary teeth, causes of tooth decay and the importance of dental hygiene. The bulk of the narrative is silly filler (for instance, a funky-looking tooth fairy pays a visit to the school and complains that she sometimes almost suffocates trying to retrieve teeth from under pillows). The book's abundant puns and asides, many delivered by the teeth themselves, may elicit as many groans as giggles from readers. One of the standout spreads, the penultimate, highlights facts about teeth during the times of the Ancient Egyptians through to George Washington. Though the book's cluttered, quirky art is at its best in comical scenarios of ambulatory teeth in the cafeteria and at recess, the visual humor, like that of the narrative, lacks the incisive bite of Keller's earlier book. Grade 1-4-This wacky book about dental hygiene begins with Dr. Flossman teaching his class, a set of personified teeth sitting at their desks looking "clean" and "bright." After the pledge of allegiance "-to this mouth and to the dentist who takes care of us," attendance is taken, and each tooth is named and identified. The teacher lectures about the parts of a tooth, primary vs. permanent teeth, and even the Tooth Fairy. Then the class is divided into groups: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars, for lunch. Following a lesson about tooth decay, reports on "teeth throughout history" are presented. Then the bell rings, signaling the end of the day. Students are advised to "rinse, gargle, and spit in a cup!-And don't forget to brush!" as they run haphazardly from the room. Two short-answer quizzes about the lesson are appended. The language and humor are somewhat sophisticated, but most youngsters will get a good laugh from a day in "Tooth School." The busy layout features lots of appealing color and animation rendered in acrylics, colored pencils, markers, and collage. Alice McGinty's Staying Healthy: Dental Care (Rosen, 1997) is a more straightforward and serious approach to the subject. For a truly painless, lighthearted look at the subject, open Open Wide and smile.

Entertaining and informative book

Laurie Keller's books provide enjoyment to the very young on up. My 10 year old daughter love this books and still laughs at the more adult jokes hidden in the small print. She also loves the anatomical information provided. This is a great book for a quick read before bedtime.

Great fun for adults, also

I am an adult, but I'm a big fan of Laurie Keller's two books. "Open Wide" is an hilarious, creative book about teeth which I thoroughly enjoyed even though, the day before, I had myself been through a painful dentist appointment. I knwo a couple of young children who read and loved Laurie's first book, "The Scrambled States of America" and I would imagine children will get a huge kick out of this one also. Her depiction of an elementary school environment, even though it's one filled with students who are teeth, is very accurate and observant and her illustrations are wonderful.
