However, BE WARNED: THE KINDLE EDITION THAT IS ADVERTISED ON THIS WEB PAGE IS NOT THE 3RD EDITION PICTURED HERE; IT IS THE SECOND AND NOW OUT OF DATE EDITION. Oh well, LOL!! Talk about irony!! If you want the 3rd edition, you have to buy it, since it is NOT yet available on Kindle. Caveat emptor!

Must-Have Book for Forensic Mental Health Professionals

Dr. Rogers has once again compiled a superb collection of scholarly articles on diverse areas of malingering assessment. I literally have referred to this text dozens of times since I purchased it. It was a major source of information for a paper I recently wrote that concerned, in part, assessment of dissimulation in forensic disability evaluations. I also recently read the chapter, Assessment of Recovered and False Memories, which helped me better understand a complex, challenging case. Rogers' introductory chapters will provide you with a sophisticated understanding of the principles, assessment approaches, and research strategies related to detecting significant exaggeration and feigning of mental disorders (in addition to similar information on the detection of defensiveness or under-reporting). I highly recommend this essential reference.

A Unique and Wonderful BooK

This book is not about being an intellectual in the American sense of showing off, but about how to be a scholar or other whose work is based on thought. In my case it is science and ancient Chinese thought. The advice in the book applies equally to both fields.

It points out that intellectual work requires asceticism and this is quite true in my experience. Many hours must be spent in study and at the lab bench or computer. While interaction with other scholars is part of the reward, one cannot contribute without the solitary hours of reading and writing.

The book is somewhat repetitious and, like most French philosophy, highly abstract. Yet it is the only source I have found that addresses the life of the mind so completely.

Highly recommended both for those beginning a life of scholarship and for acccomplished scholars who want to reflect on their lives.

The Intellectual Life by Philip Gilbert Hamerton ---Paperback 8x11

Hamerton uses the word 'intellectual' in the circa 1870's European sense. With careful attention to that word and the 19th century authorship, this book's subject matter itself is perhaps the best book of its kind. For those intellectuals seeking guidance or mentors who seeking guidance for their mentees Hamerton's elegant writing style is a delight for all those who are so intrigued. Hamerton wrote several other equally prescient books.

Hamerton presents his thesis and personal concern using many short stories about the experience of his friends, acquaintances, and his own life. These individuals had very different beginnings in life yet found themselves on similar trajectories. Many if not most of us might (have) find this book life-changing if read seriously while young. However it is edifying at any age. Hamerton gently reminds us throughout life is short and smart people amidst their dreams often overestimate what they can do in a lifetime. Hence they often make a mess in subsequent shortfalls. As a good example of someone avoiding this consequence of haste in living thoughtfully, Hamerton recounts the wisdom of his father's approach to life.

As he used the male pronoun Hamerton throughout, note he writes for both genders (if you read carefully) explaining British culture (~1873) did not recognize female intellectualism. Hence few young women were able to get support for such an orientation. Hamerton clearly observes there was no reason why women could not seek development of a higher intellect. Several of his stories were about young women.

On the topic of the welfare of unmarried men, who as men found it easier to develop as intellectuals in 1873 circa Britain, he laments their frustration with finding suitable marriage prospects. These few women would understand and accept their husbands' psychology and be undaunted by their often uncommon personalities. He notes the unliklihood of this type of match might lead to poor alternative choices. Happily for Hamerton he did find just the right woman although late in life.

The type font chosen for this publishing, perhaps for economy, has a very thin letter style (ie font weight) and for me is somewhat harder to read. Otherwise this soft cover version is well-made. There are the online versions however as a bookshelf destined gift this book is a classic. There are more recent hardcover reprints. Thus the paperback is a bargain. Otherwise it will be rare book prices for the 1873 printing. Beware there is another book of very similar title but different author. My five star rating is for the original literary work and does not reflect the quality of this particular publication.

Intelligent and timely book

I bought this book off another site after reading a snippet in another book. "The Intellectual Life" is a very shrewd piece of work, the writing both articulate and timely. There is philosophical advice on almost every sort of topic, from intellectual friendships to sickness and solitude to nonconformity. Hamerton's writing is sensible, straight-forward but intelligent, and always insightful. For a book written in the 1800s its commentary on life is still relevant in twenty-first century society. I consult this book quite often and always find myself surprised and amused by what is written. This is a neglected piece of work from a neglected writer in philosophy.

A pioneering study in domestic violence

The 1984 NBC telepic with Farrah Fawcett probably got more attention than Faith McNulty's book on which it was inspired. In the realm of "Men, Women and Rape," still regarded as the definitive study of rape as an act of violence, "The Burning Bed" does likewise on the subject of domestic violence. Based on the 1970's trial of a battered wife and mother who doused her passed out, drunken husband with gasoline before sending him off in flames, McNulty calls attention to the shame and silence with which the subject of spousal abuse was given, even in that era. The author does a masterful job in detailing the victim's years of physical and mental abuse, so much and so many that triggered what we now call post-traumatic stress or battered wife syndromes. But without those clinical identifications and before it become vogue not to have to be beaten, the wife and mother here is charged with premediated murder, and her only legal defense then was a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. That that was the only plea victims of violence had, in modern history, is shameful unto itself, and McNulty's book doesn't pooh-pooh the subject and confronts it openly and critically. In many respects, the success of the TV adaptation overshadowed the actual book, and that's a shame. Even more than in the dramatization, the book delves into the deepest and darkest pits of domestic violence, brings it to light and commands the judicial system and private citizenry to demand that the matter become a public policy issue. Obviously, McNulty's position paid off. Now, unlike then, the victims of domestic crimes really do have a choice, and that choice no longer is solely physical retaliation against the perpetrator.

Enough

When is enough, enough? For Francine Hughes it took years of abuse and loneliness for her to realize that she had had enough. The Burning Bed was one of the inspirational books that I have ever read. For a young woman, Mrs. Hughes was so courageous. I admire her strength. After years of being beaten by the hands of her husband, Francine retaliates and while her husband is sleeping, starts a fire in their bed. For years she had come so close to death that the thought of dying didn't even scare her; it was like she had hoped for it to come. But after bearing four of his children, she had something to live for. Lonely and afraid she did the only thing she could do. Now facing murder charges Francine is forced to go back to her battered life and let the world know of her sorrow. The Burning Bed follows her through her long trial and the outcome leaves you breathless.

Essential Reading

The Burning Bed, a book by Faith McNulty, describes the life of a battered housewife and mother. Written from Francine Hughes' point of view, this book shows exactly why it is so hard to leave someone you love. The book doesn't try to convince you to take sides, it just states the facts and lets you decide for yourself. The book also goes into great detail about Francines' trial and her life after this crime. I would recommend this book to any reader, male or female. I think The Burning Bed is essential reading for everyone.
