Interesting read, and for free, you can't go wrong

For a free book, I suppose it deserves 5-stars, but for the content its probably a 3 because of its general nature. I did learn some new things that I wasn't aware of, so I went ahead and split the difference at a 4. You should already be aware enough before downloading if you're the target audience for this book.

The archive provides Reynolds with the remnants of Smithson's working life -- magazines, postcards from other artists, notebooks, and perhaps most important, his library -- from which she reconstructs the physical and conceptual world that Smithson inhabited. Reynolds explores the relation of Smithson's art-making, thinking about art-making, writing, and interaction with other artists to the articulated ideology and discreet assumptions that determined the parameters of artistic practice of the time.A central focus of Reynolds's analysis is Smithson's fascination with the blind spots at the center of established ways of seeing and thinking about culture. For Smithson, New Jersey was such a blind spot, and he returned there again and again -- alone and with fellow artists -- to make art that, through its location alone, undermined assumptions about what and, more important, where, art should be. For those who guarded the integrity of the established art world, New Jersey was "elsewhere"; but for Smithson, "elsewheres" were the defining, if often forgotten, locations on the map of contemporary culture.

Basing her study of leading Sixties artist Robert Smithson (1938-73) on a collection of his personal papers and his library, which were donated in 1987 to the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art, Reynolds (art & art history, Univ. of Texas, Austin) focuses on the historical and ideological thinking of the 1960s and early 1970s in an effort to delineate Smithson's complexity, both artistically and philosophically. Smithson challenged the established art world's narrow vision and limited boundaries: for him, New Jersey became the prototype of "elsewhere," a place where he could create works for specific sites while engaging the outside, natural world in the creative process. Reynolds allows the reader to follow Smithson's process of creation through his own notebooks and sketches, his interviews and articles, the images he clipped from magazines, and the photographs he took. This admirable project, however, is studded with jargon and an idiosyncratic approach that may baffle the reader. This book is the ultimate spy novel. You have the hero, a villian, and the beautiful woman that the hero falls in love with! The hero is an ex-assassin who, sickened by the killing, is retired. His replacement has gone rogue and is killing anyone for money.

The entire book is action packed, nonstop from cover to cover. The hero is a excellent tactition, planning his moves 5 or more steps ahead of his competition. He also trained the villian. I'd really hate to play chess against him.

The villian is a cold blooded killer and a pervert to boot. He'll kill anyone, from a world leader to a child in the street, for money.

The beautiful blond vet is blood brother to a world leader the government thinks is next on the villian's list.

Add the three together and you have a story that can will stand with Tom Clancy.
