Lauri Keller, the much-applauded creator of the wacky, wonderful The Scrambled States of America, traces one school day in a classroom of teeth in Open Wide: Tooth School Inside. Fortunately, when Dr. Flossman takes attendance, all 32 teeth are present to take the pledge: "And to the gums on which we stand, strong and healthy, with toothbrushes and toothpaste for all." The day proceeds with an anatomy lesson (illustrating dentin, enamel, pulp, etc.), which is interrupted only momentarily when Carl Canine badmouths a little molar (hurting his feelings even though he has a hard enamel shell on the outside). Sally Incisor then shares her report on primary teeth ("Babies don't even need teeth. You never see them eating corn on the cob or anything"), and the Tooth Fairy makes a guest appearance, offering molar-coaster rides and bemoaning the whole "under-the-pillow" idea, which causes her to fear suffocation.

Lunch is a messy affair--complete with food fights--and when it is over, none of the teeth feel like brushing. Of course, an in-depth lesson on tooth decay and cavities ignites a flurry of flossing, gargling, and brushing. As in Scrambled States (which is a must-see if you haven't yet read it), every clever, colorful collage bubbles with activity, hilarious asides between the teeth, and tiny details that you may miss the first time through. Two quizzes conclude the book, posing questions such as "George Washington had teeth made out of rocks and twigs. T or F" and "Tooth decay is caused by a) bacteria and germs, b) slugs and worms, c) bad perms." While, in her first book, the states themselves delivered the facts in fun-filled chatty exchanges, here the teacher drills into his anthropomorphic pupils a smattering of tooth truths, including the physical composition of teeth, the function of primary teeth, causes of tooth decay and the importance of dental hygiene. The bulk of the narrative is silly filler (for instance, a funky-looking tooth fairy pays a visit to the school and complains that she sometimes almost suffocates trying to retrieve teeth from under pillows). The book's abundant puns and asides, many delivered by the teeth themselves, may elicit as many groans as giggles from readers. One of the standout spreads, the penultimate, highlights facts about teeth during the times of the Ancient Egyptians through to George Washington. Though the book's cluttered, quirky art is at its best in comical scenarios of ambulatory teeth in the cafeteria and at recess, the visual humor, like that of the narrative, lacks the incisive bite of Keller's earlier book. Grade 1-4-This wacky book about dental hygiene begins with Dr. Flossman teaching his class, a set of personified teeth sitting at their desks looking "clean" and "bright." After the pledge of allegiance "-to this mouth and to the dentist who takes care of us," attendance is taken, and each tooth is named and identified. The teacher lectures about the parts of a tooth, primary vs. permanent teeth, and even the Tooth Fairy. Then the class is divided into groups: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars, for lunch. Following a lesson about tooth decay, reports on "teeth throughout history" are presented. Then the bell rings, signaling the end of the day. Students are advised to "rinse, gargle, and spit in a cup!-And don't forget to brush!" as they run haphazardly from the room. Two short-answer quizzes about the lesson are appended. The language and humor are somewhat sophisticated, but most youngsters will get a good laugh from a day in "Tooth School." The busy layout features lots of appealing color and animation rendered in acrylics, colored pencils, markers, and collage. Alice McGinty's Staying Healthy: Dental Care (Rosen, 1997) is a more straightforward and serious approach to the subject. For a truly painless, lighthearted look at the subject, open Open Wide and smile.

Entertaining and informative book

Laurie Keller's books provide enjoyment to the very young on up. My 10 year old daughter love this books and still laughs at the more adult jokes hidden in the small print. She also loves the anatomical information provided. This is a great book for a quick read before bedtime.

Great fun for adults, also

I am an adult, but I'm a big fan of Laurie Keller's two books. "Open Wide" is an hilarious, creative book about teeth which I thoroughly enjoyed even though, the day before, I had myself been through a painful dentist appointment. I knwo a couple of young children who read and loved Laurie's first book, "The Scrambled States of America" and I would imagine children will get a huge kick out of this one also. Her depiction of an elementary school environment, even though it's one filled with students who are teeth, is very accurate and observant and her illustrations are wonderful.

About the Author

Elliotte Rusty Harold is originally from New Orleans to which he returns periodically in search of a decent bowl of gumbo. However, he currently resides in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn with his wife Beth, dog Shayna, and cat Marjorie (named after his mother-in-law). He's a frequent speaker at industry conferences including Software Development, Dr. Dobb's Architecure & Design World, SD Best Practices, Extreme Markup Languages, and too many user groups to count. His open source projects include the XOM Library for processing XML with Java and the Amateur media player.

W. Scott Means has been a professional software developer since 1988, when he joined Microsoft Corporation at the age of 17. He was one of the original developers of OS/2 1.1 and Windows NT, and did some of the early work on the Microsoft Network for the Microsoft Advanced Technology and Business Development group. Since then he has written software for everything from multiplayer casino games to railroad geometry measurement equipment. A reference useful for a limited audience among those who already know XML basics

O'Reilly's XML IN A NUTSHELL is, like all entries in the Nutshell series, a desktop quick reference. It provides concise information about nearly all matters of XML, and is split into roughly four parts. The first introduces XML, the concept of tags, well-formedness, Unicode, DTD's and schemas, namespaces, and so forth. The second provides an overview for the many formats that are built upon XML, such as XHTML, XSL:FO, Docbook, etc., and technologies that plug-in into XML, namely XSLT, XPath, XLinks, XPointers, XInclude, and CSS. The fourth covers DOM and SAX, the APIs for dealing with XML. Finally, the book ends with a "Reference section" for various technologies covered earlier in the book, structured much like O'Reilly's pocket guides. I found the Reference section somewhat inconvenient, it causes flipping back and forth when each section could have been simply integrated with the previous discussion of the relevant technology earlier in the book. Furthermore, the book ends with a long series of Unicode character tables, which are of limited utility, as they cover only a portion of Unicode, which has already expanded in the time since, and these tables simply bloat the book a little.

This third edition is especially admirable for its advocation of schemas, whereas many other XHTML publications would mention only DTDs.

XML IN A NUTSHELL is emphatically not a tutorial for XML, in spite of the friendly introduction to the markup language that opens the book. For each of the technologies mentioned herein, you'll want a separate book. For XPath especially, O'Reilly's XPATH AND XPOINTER is worth getting. XML IN A NUTSHELL instead provides only a quick reference for matters the reader is already acquainted with. Now, much of this quick reference information can be freely had on the Web. I'd recommend the book only to those who are fortunate enough to have someone else cover their book expenses, or can get it from their library, or those who simply adore print documentation.

Covers almost every major XML standard

This is a combination field guide and terse standards reference for XML. It covers an amazing variety of XML standards. From the fundamentals of XML, through the document standards, and into transformation technologies like XSLT. Standards include; XML, XPath, XLink, XSLT, XSL-FO, XML Schema, DTDs, among others. The book also cover some standards that use XML, like SAX and DOM.

The book is fairly high level. It assumes that you know the basics and need a complete reference for the technologies. This is that case with all of the Nutshell books, but given the amount of technologies this books cover, the coverage is fairly terse.

The organization of the book is great. There are only a few illustrations and they are used effectively. A solid reference for anyone who works with XML technologies on a daily basis. Highly recommended.

Loaded with info but needs better editing/organization

They might as well take out the first half of the book at trying to teach beginners XML. The reason being that the writing style is confusing, full of long run-on sentences, with few to no examples for demonstration. As a reference book, this is probably a flawless companion. And it does say that it's intended for experienced developers. The tutorial chapters serve well as reviews and tips if the person already knows some XML. Also, make sure you check the book's web site, it has a long errata list, so get ready to correct those errors. If you're a beginner to XML, this isn't the book to start out with. I recommend "Beginning XML - 3rd Edition" by Wrox Press as your first XML book.

This book is great!

It is thorough and comprehensive, covering the latest research on gender differences across numerous domains, including physical/mental health, relationships, communication, and the workplace. It considers the theoretical explanations surrounding the psychology of gender while still successfully evaluating the extant empirical literature. Helgeson has done an excellent job of updating this edition. She is also careful to acknowledge the intersection of gender with factors like age, race, and sexual orientation. The "do gender" exercises in the book also make for excellent small group projects for students.

The eBook edition is awful! It is poorly edited and formatted. It is the worst eTextook I have ever used. I hope the hard copy is better! There are no built in flash cards. There is no section at the bottom of the screen where you can see where you are in a chapter and advance ahead that way. This eBook is like someone just typed a PDF version of the book and provided zero interactive or study features common to digital textbooks. I am sorry I purchased it.

Fresh Approach

Fresh approach to a subject which has been written about many times. The book is aligned well-short, sharp, to the point with some subtlety in tips on executing a sound negotiating strategy. The inter relationship of a negotiating position with an assessment and analysis of self is novel which gives the book some stature and business credibility. A good read for the less experienced with sound tips and strategies and a sharp reminder for the seasoned negotiator-there are plenty of new tricks and ideas out there. Read ithe book and reduce the likelihood of being out negotiated.

This book is the opposite of a typical business book. It is short, to the point, not overly complicated. It is refreshing! It's for business readers, but for the rest of us too. In short, the book provides a filter with which to interpret interactions, conversations, and challenges and suggested approaches for how to generate mutual value versus defining right from wrong. If everyone read and digested this book, we'd all be able to see each other's point of view a little more clearly and debate and negotiate toward agreements that made us all happier.

He teaches�and researches in advertising, marketing,�and consumer cultural�policy. Chris has published his work in�some 200 books, research articles, features, reports,�conference papers and�presentations. He has consulted�on UK alcohol policy�with the�UK Government Cabinet Office and the Department of Health,�and with commercial organisations such as ITV, Sky Media, Channel 4 TV, New Media Group and the Huffington Post on�topics including�product placement and native advertising. Professor Hackley�is a regular contributor to print and broadcast media on marketing and consumer�policy topics with more than 100 media appearances and mentions.�He�has been interviewed on�alcohol policy and media policy�for BBC TV,�ITV,�BBC Radio 4,�and Channel 4 TV, and his joint research has been mentioned in most UK national newspapers, and also in some�overseas publications such as the Melbourne Age, Harvard Business Review, and�The Times of India.���

This book presents the art and science in violin repair in a clear step-by-step manner. Co-authored by Hans Weisshaar and Margaret Shipman, the manual has gained a world wide reputation as the standard bearer in its craft. It is hardbound and contains 41 chapters, 125 photographs, 60 drawings and 18 patterns.

From the Author
Hans Weisshaar and I took on the big project of Violin Restoration because there had never been a comprehensive working manual written in our field. Nine years, 42 chapters of step-by-step instruction and 18 patterns later, it was available in the summer of 1989. We thought that the 2000 copies we printed would satisfy the world market for restoration. What we had not realized is how much of it can be applied in new making and in everyday "set up" work-- making bridges, planing fingerboards, etc.
So as the years have passed, proprietors of shops that sell trumpets as well as violins have been asked by their string repairmen to invest in this book. It is heartwarming to see that as we intended, our book is really turning out to be what we had hoped it would be--a gift to our craft.

A must have.

There are certain books in the world of violin making and repair that have become standard texts; Heron-Allen's "Violin Making as it was and is" being the most obvious. This book deserves to rank alongside these older works both because of the range of work covered and the consumate skill shown. This is a workshop book and not just armchair reading. The only caveat is that no single text can cover all the problems that may be encountered in violin repair and this should not be treated as the last word on the subject, rather it should be used as a springboard for developing good technique and an inspiration for the repairer to solve problems in innovative ways that the indivdual job may require.

A must for any restorer's library.

As a violin restorer and maker, I have found this book to be indispensible. The thorough, step-by-step instructions and crystal clear photos are the best reference material available to date. Contains all of the most common damage types and multiple methods for approaching each repair. The only drawback is that some of the methods and materials described are either dated or no longer available.

An excellent guide and foundation to repairs for violin makers, but I wouldn't rely on it completely

A great book for an experienced luthier who wants to do complicated and professional repairs, however some of the information is misleading and in a few cases downright bad. Just forget about removing a violin neck in the first way the book suggests, by hitting the scroll with your palm. And some of the ideas presented for set-up are pretty strange, like using complicated jigs to discover the optimal height and slant for a cello's fingerboard position. And don't use sandarac as a crack filler, it will craquelure very badly in the near future. And don't remove stubborn glue with highly-toxic-varnish-dissolving-you-need-a-permit-to-get-it compounds.

That said, this book really is filled with a lot of wisdom, and makes for a great foundation for high-quality repair work. Just be careful, because I don't think I would rely on all of this 100%.
