Keeping track of your progress is paramount if you plan to improve in your jiu jitsu game. Most high level Black Belts and World Champions know that if you improve your technique by only 1% each day then the compounding effect will make you proficient in the gentle art at a very high level.
Keeping a series of techniques in your head is a complex matter. This is human chess after all, for every attack there is a defense for every sweep, takedown, pass, submission there is a counter...and counter to that counter. It makes much more sense to keep taking notes than trying to remember what you did, even if you just did it. How many times do you get to the next class after practicing a sweep and you can't remember the vaguest detail!
Also, when you review, as you should periodically, some techniques you will identify as being easy to perform and fit your body-type better. These techniques I put a checkmark in the corner of my journal and come back to drill some more.
The techniques that present a challenge should have an X in the corner of the page, meaning you need to revisit this in more detail maybe with your professor or coach. This art form is a process yet it is system driven. One thing leads logically to another. It’s position-transition-submission.
The logic, though, is lightning in a bottle. It needs to be grasped and placed into the correct place in the puzzle or the puzzle will not unlock.
Remember how a technique was working really well and you were catching everyone or passing guards, then a couple of weeks later it stopped working?? What happened? Probably, a detail you were applying has now been forgotten. Wouldn’t it be great if you could go back and retrieve that detail, well, now you can with the Zen Jiu Jitsu Training Log.

BJJ log
By Amazon Customer
I hesitate to write this as bjj is a zero sum game. But for the benefit of all and to strengthen the sport.
Journaling is something most of us know we should be doing but don't.
There are generally several factors for most. Laziness and ignorance are my top. Laziness to be consistent, to physically keep track of my log, to bring a pen, to write in it, and others. Ignorance of what to track, how to track, how to measure gains, etc.
This book imo addresses these issues for myself.
The book cover is of similar construction to the VictoryBelt books, a semi glossy cover. The interior pages are of similar consistency to printer paper.
I've used several different journals in the past, from cheap .50cent composition books, LannyBasshams journal, Sportsjournal WODBooks. online blogs and others. Both Lanny's and WODbooks are great, but not bjj specific. I've done logs with a lot of writing and some with a minimalists style. For reference and comparisons sake as of this writing I am a 39yo brown belt in bjj. I started my bjj logs as a white belt, at the time there were no formal books on bjj. Thus I had to draw and jot moves down. I did that for a very brief time. Now there are videos at will and a surplus of books. This is the information age, it is now a matter of doing the work and creating automaticity.
I like this book for it's intended purpose. BJJ specific. To document and track metrics. Each page is a single session. There are 3 sections for techniques learned/worked. Each technique section is 7lines of 2"x2". This may or may not appeal to you. It works for me, I learn by less detail and more key points. Thus I prefer to write key points vs a novel. With youtube on phones, one could even simply write the name of the move to reference later. There is a section for sparring notes. BJJ differs from tma as it spars religiously, so why not take notes? instead of repeating the same mistakes for years. There is a bio section to track and note the session.
This is not journal for those who love to write, but more a log book to jot down quick blurbs and key points.
Improvements to the book could be
a rigid cover(possibly hardcover).
spiral bound
competition log section
blank pages for one to draw, flowchart, notes, various
Options to ADD in future versions for the book could be
all inclusive type of journal, including - fitness activites(running, weights, etc), intake(diet), sleep
blank heading for mental mantras/focus - monthly/weekly/daily ie. - just do it, flow with the go, etc
I plan to buy another copy when I am finished with this one. I also plan to cover this log book with a brown paper bag cover to make it more subtle and durable, with a piece of tape to hold a pencil. Track your progress, one day you will look back, be able to read and study what you've done in the past and appreciate and learn from it.

It's just a training log that's entirely blank for you to fill out. Don't expect anything more or you'll be very dissappointed.
By David L. Gong
It's exactly what the title says, it's a bunch of blank training logs that you fill out with notes from each of your practice sessions for the purpose of tracking what happened in your training, what went well and not so well, etc. If you're purchasing this expecting to learn a bunch of new techniques to use, you'll be very disappointed. It's about 6-7 pages worth of actual text that cover how to use the journal and what to do after you're done, the rest of it is just a bunch of blank training logs that you're to fill out. The training logs themselves are helpful no doubt, but execution of it leaves much to be desired, refer to the cons section below. If they revised the book to how I suggested in my last paragraph, I would have given it a 4-5 Star review.
Pros:
-The sections in the log are clearly labeled and they provide samples.
-It will help you if you're diligent and use it on a consistent.
Cons:
-It's a paperback book with a solid spine which makes it kind of a pain to write in, especially if you're writing on the back pages.
-It will get mangled up pretty quick as you write in it.
-Small pages, you can easily fill up the entire sheet if you have large handwriting.
-The pages are not perforated, so it's a little tricky you if want to tear a page out cleanly.
Would I buy it again? Probably not. Like I had indicated above it's not exactly the best design for a handwritten training journal. A more preferable solution would be to have a hardcover (easier surface to write on) with all of the pages held together in ring binder or loose leaf rings. Along with larger 8.5"X11" perforated pages for easy tearing.
If/When I start my next training journal I will probably just make my own by recreating the training log sections in Excel and print out a bunch of them out on 8.5" X 11" paper. Then grab a thin binder 3 ring binder or a couple loose leaf rings and throw them all in there.

Needs to be larger
By Tobe Johnson
I train at a very technical dojo and there may need to be more space here to write down techniques. Everything else is okay and keeping a journal is a good idea. Most of my techniques are on MGInaction so the book is more personal.
