About the Author
Meredith J. Marsh received her bachelor's degree in geography from Calvin College in 1999, her Master's Degree in geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 2003, and her Ph.D. (also in geography) from UCSB in 2009. Meredith has worked as a Reader for the APHG exam in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014, and she is currently an associate professor of geography at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri.

Peter S. Alagona is an assistant professor of history and environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He holds an M.A. degree in geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has also held academic positions at both Harvard and Stanford universities.

I took the 2016 test and got a 4. The multiple choice was almost the same as it was on the test. The free response I found easier on the test This book is also very helpful for a guide for the class. SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE COMPACTED DOWN INTO THIS BOOK. VERY HELPFUL

A Jar of Dreams is set in the 1930s during The Great Depression. The location is Berkeley, California and our main character is Rinko Tsujimura, an 11- year old Japanese girl that is having a hard time fitting in. Rink does not like her name (she wishes it were easier to pronounce and one that people would remember), and she does not like her hair or her face, the clues that give away her Japanese connection. Rinko wishes she could be just "like everybody else" as she is tired of her classmates teasing her teasing at school and the awful stares she and her family receive from others when she is out in public with her family.
The setting is so important for the reader to understand as it explains the treatment Rinko and her family are victims of and defines the issues the family is faced with. Japanese immigrants faced pressure and discrimination within their communities and neighborhoods. Many Americans were resentful of their presence and did not trust them. In addition, many felt threatened by the economic competition from Japanese companies.

The story is centered around a problem Rinko's father is faced with that could financially affect the family. The family is in the process of trying to determine the best way to move forward, when Aunt Waka, Rinko's mother's sister, arrives from Japan, with some wisdom that not only reminds Rinko of the importance of her cultural heritage, but the importance of standing up for what one believes in and pursuing their dreams.

A Jar of Dreams is a middle grade reader, but this book not just for middle readers. In this era, the theme is familiar and the plot is easy for young children to follow. The content is strong and engaging that adult readers will enjoy the storyline. Though Rinko is the main character, and it is expected that she well grow from her experience, there is character development for all the characters in the story. The storyline also demonstrates how one person's action can affect others.

Author Yoshiko Uchida did a great job writing a plot centered around a conflict that affected each character in a unique way. Though the story is told through the eyes of Rinko, who many adults would assume is too young to understand what is going on, it is evident in Rinko's tone that she is very well aware of the social climate and can perceive the hurt and frustration the conflict brings to her family and other members of her community. This makes it easy for the reader to relate and connect with her. The structure of the story is developed and well written.

As a child born in America to parents that immigrated to the United States. I shared many of the feelings Rinko talked about. I can remember as a young child telling my teachers to call me "Dorothy" instead of my name, because my name was the subject of harsh jokes on the school playground. I read this story with my daughter because I wanted her to understand the importance of cultural heritage and identity. This is a good book to use to engage young readers in discussions regarding immigration and stereotypes, especially with what is transpiring in the U.S.as depicted in the media.

I truly recommend this book. Again, it is an easy read- roughly 136 pages. Uchida has two other books that follow Rinko. They sit in my Amazon cart now, ready for purchase.

Great kids book about life as a first generation American and prejudices she and her family faced in 1930s California. A visiting aunt gives her a new perspective on who she is and what being Japanese American means. In the back to the adult reader is what is coming down the road for this family.

As a 6 year old boy, I remember my grandfather skipping rope in the garage. I didn't realize it would be the last time I ever saw him. I've been told that he never admitted that his cancer came from smoking. Even his doctor, who was his best friend, smoked. My grandfather died of lung cancer from being a chain smoker. When I went to graduate school at the University of Georgia in 1994, I started picking up books about chemicals not only cigarettes, but in food, candy, gum, cosmetics, you name it. So I wanted to put all of my research to good use and hopefully prevent people from ever having to go through the nightmare of cancer. For years I studied about the chemicals in cigarettes and exactly how they affect your body. I wrote a book called "Don't Eat Cancer" which contains four chapters solely about all the hidden secrets that "Big Tobacco" does NOT want you to know or understand about cigarettes, so smokers won't quit, or can't quit. Have smoked fro 30 plus years, tried all sorts of methods, but something in this easy to read book clicked with me. Plus what it also taught me what I was REALLY smoking - something i ignored for decades. I still miss smoking, and i love it when someone else smokes near me, I can have a smell, but so far so good, I am CHOOSING not to smoke........ each day at a time. Its early days for me, 10 weeks or so, but have the book with me, so i can read it again in a couple of months. Good luck to you all out there :)

Good advice but won't work for everyone

I think the advice in this book is credible. Makes sense. But if you are a hardcore smoker, it's not enough to make you stop. Also, following this book and buying the suplements and so forth could get VERY expensive very quickly! I did, however, change to organic tobacco because of the advice of this book. I do feel much better and my advice is that even if you are not able to quit, at least do this one step.

Training by practicing

What better way of learning by practicing ?

I finished the book and am surprised of the quality of the footage provided just for training purposes. For the price, it's a bargain.
Indeed it's almost impossible for non professionals to get access to this quality of footage.

I was not a total beginner in video editing but hadn't touched Final Cut Pro X before and I found myself in the perfect target audience.
This book is half on using FCPX, half on the art of editing. As a result it's a fast learning method but just a small introduction to the craft of the cut.

I prefer learning on a real book while practicing on the screen so that I don't have to switch applications on the screen.
Found a few mistakes while following rigorously each instructions but overall it was fairly easy to follow.

Editing my own version of the movie for the sequence left without detailed instructions and comparing my work to the provided final cut proved itself to be very useful.

Some Issues

It reads well and it's organized logically. The DVD promises to be a great asset but I haven't used it yet.
BUT it's as if it was made by Jekyll and Hyde. The photos are small and hopelessly dark; did anyone bother to proof this book before rolling production? And the font is too small and light.
I don't know why other posters have not complained about this too unless I got a copy from a bad run. If that's it I'd like to know so I can ask for a good one. Seriously, this is an issue for me and I think it will be for most who get a copy that looks like mine does.

I would have given it 5 stars if it had been up-to-date with the latest version of FINAL CUT PRO. Otherwise, it's a fantastic tutorial. FCP has a very steep learning curve so this publication (with DVD) really made it possible to survive.

Misleading Description

I ordered this book after carefully looking for the book in an Italian version. It arrived quickly which was a plus, but I was extremely disappointed to open the book and find that it was in fact the English translation. I have ordered many books before both Italian and English and have never found a description to be so misleading as this one. I utilized the 'Look inside' feature and the book was displayed as being in Italian. I was extremely disappointed with this product from Amazon and their representation of it. This mistake greatly delayed me from receiving the correct book. I also went to a different website to order the correct Italian version of the book. I think it should be made much clearer as to what language a book is in, a basic piece of information, especially for a well known book-the most widely read Italian novel ever.

A true and engaging masterpiece in world literature-- beautifully published in full, brown leather by the famous The Easton Press. Well, anyone could read this great work in inexpensive editions but to book collectors there's nothing like the fine feel of cool leather bound book such as this one.

I chose 5 stars because this book deserves it. I was impressed how Pastor Myers correlates physical fitness and spiritual fitness. I enjoyed this book so much, that I bought an electronic copy and a paperback copy for my adult children. I have recommended this book to several people.

Riviting Story! Absolutely brilliant plot!

I use a Bentley manual to keep my VW Jetta on the road, and this book has been a life-saver. I was pleasantly surprised to find a reasonably priced hardcover for the BMW I recently acquired. This is THE go-to-book for any mechanic, shade-tree or professional. Excellent index and table of context, clear diagrams, good paper quality, good quality images and photographs. The one complaint I have on the 5 Series manual, is that while it had very detailed instructions on engine maintenance and removal and even work on the valve train, there were no diagrams or illustrations of the entire motor out of the engine-bay, which would be helpful for those of us not familiar with this engine.

Terrific BMW Maintenance Book

This book tells you everything that you need to know to perform just about any BMW repair on an E34 Series with the exception of engine replacement or transmission replacement. This book covers just about every component of the vehicle (electrical and mechanical) and the book is easy to undersand.

If you have just a basic knowledge of cars, then you will understand this manual in no time. Even if you have NO knowledge of cars, you can still understand how to maintain the E34 Series and you will be able to discuss problems more intelligently with a mechanic. I use this book to maintain my own E34 series BMW and it was well worth the $56 because it has saved me thousands of dollars in repairs bills.

I bought this manual for my physical therapist. He owns a 1995 BMW and his friend told him the manuals were a must have for any BMW owner. He also told him the mauals were not cheap. The manual I bought was listed as "very good condition" and it could of easily passed for "New" thats how well this book was taken care of. Depending on what you are seeking through amazon.com it just may be in your best interest to buy used if the item you are seeking is available.
