Introduction

The first calendar that North American Indians ever had was Turtle's shell. Our Ancestors watched the passing of the cycles and seasons, noting that thirteen moons passed before the same seasons returned. Grandmother Nisa (Moon) was our guide. Through her changing cycles, she told women when their bodies were fertile and when they would experience their Moontimes, or menstrual flows. Grandmother Moon disappeared and returned, showing her full face thirteen times during the year. The Earth Mother, who was represented by the Most fertile creature on our planet, the Turtle, showed our Ancestors how to mark the passing of each moon cycle. Turtle's shell bore the thirteen moons of the year inside of a frame that formed the circle we call the Sacred Hoop, or Medicine Wheel.

This unifying circle represents the sacred relationship of all life to all life. The Sacred Hoop also represented the path across the sky or orbit that was our Earth Mother's yearly journey around Grandfather Sun. The orbit of Grandmother Moon's journey around our Earth Mother is another circle, giving the Ancestors an understanding of the import of all concentric circles bringing life into unity or harmony.

These thirteen moon cycles gave birth to the legends of the Thirteen Original Clan Mothers who represent the gifts and abilities humankind can develop during the Earthwalk, or physical life. These lessons of developing human potential contain the skills that every Two-legged human must learn in order to live in harmony with all life forms. When we learn what our potentials are and develop the skills of right relationship, we can offer to share those gifts with the whole of the Human Tribe. Generosity is the key to working for the benefit of all living things. If we give of ourselves and of our gifts, the blessings we have received are shared. We can then expand the boundaries and capabilities of all human potential.

When my editor approached me about writing this book, I began to see the value of putting together some lessons or thoughts for each day that could educate the reader about the ways of harmony that have imbued the best of Native American lifestyles. When these concepts are honored, the ideas of living in harmony within a community are easily attainable. Many non-Native friends have asked me to include some of the unspoken rules of etiquette that our Native American community observes in order to bridge Potential cultural misunderstandings. I have done this in this text because it benefits our urban Native youths who have not been exposed to the Ancestors' ways as well as educating non-Natives. These lessons of respecting others and their Sacred Spaces can be applied to any culture, resulting in harmonious living.

I was recently surprised when one of my Mohawk sisters told me that she did not know that I had written the poems that begin every chapter in every book that I have authored or coauthored. The only exceptions carry the two names of the writers I quoted. I chose to write some of the thoughts for the day in this text with poetry because the rhythms and cadence of poetry often open our minds to different ways of understanding. Other thoughts for the day are written as Medicine Stories, and all are original. That is to say that these writings are based upon the lessons I have been taught on my path, but none of this text is taken verbatim from other sources.

Harper San Francisco wanted all original material for this book, so I decided to look at events in my life that had taught me about harmony, self-discovery, sharing, love, and more. I then asked for the Great Mystery's guidance. I called on the Clan Mothers' spirits to assist me in knowing which lessons would best represent their creed of Life, Unity, and Equality for Eternity. Then I used my gifts of storytelling and writing to express the beauty of the Ancestors' ways of harmony, creating new material that could reflect these lessons to others. I trust that these lessons, stories, and poems will assist all readers in continuing on their paths of personal healing. My personal desire, in writing this book, is that each one of you claim your right to become your vision!

Great book!
By Morgan D. Dolloff
I purchased the How To LEAP Handbook for my son as soon as the basketball season ended this year. He had just finished competing for his high school’s basketball team. He mainly played on the junior varsity, but he managed to get in a couple of varsity blowouts. His coach blatantly told him that he would have to be more athletic if he wanted to play on the varsity this upcoming season.
Because of his talk with the coach, he was sufficiently motivated. I watched him really give an extra effort for the first time in his life. The first two weeks were a butt kicker and shock to his body. He hung in there and results soon followed. BIG RESULTS!!! He can now dunk with force and ease one handed or with both. Three months ago, he could barely grab the rim, and he had to run to do that. I am totally blown away with the results!!! I KNOW that I will be watching my son play varsity basketball next year thanks to our secret weapon, the How To LEAP Handbook.

Learn to Sky -- whether short or tall!
By Amazon Customer
As a kid in Philly, I played a lot of basketball. I'd almost always settle for jumpers because I was not confident in my capabilities as a leaper or an athlete. Predominately, this was due to two factors: 1) my perceived lack of athletic ability, and 2) my belief that I could not build athletic prowess by 'leaps' and bounds. In the "How-to-Leap Handbook," Coach Ice logically breaks down the mental barriers and stereotypes that keep us from jumping out of the gym. He then paints a very clear picture of how (through a mixture of proper diet, attitude, core-conditioning exercises, and more) we can work to maximize our verticality and physical confidence. As a coach of the game and a basketball lifer with extensive dunking experience, Coach Ice's practical know-how and wisdom certainly show in this fantastic guide. Thanks, Coach Ice!

Valuable and insightful textbook on education
By Z Hayes
I just finished this textbook for a semester in graduate school, and found it very enlightening. I used to teach secondary school in Singapore for about eight years before moving to the United States and after several years as a stay-at-home mom decided that I would love to return to teaching [after grad school].

I love the way this book is organized -there's a lot of useful information not only within the text, but also in the margins, for example the inclusion of the INTASC standards, the Reflect & Write feature which allows readers to ponder on pertinent educational issues, the "In the Classroom" feature which describes real-life experiences of actual teachers in different parts of the country, and many more.

The text is easy to read, and never reads like a dense academic text. Everything is clearly explained and makes the issues described easy to comprehend and follow. The chapters covered are:
What It Means to Be a Teacher
Teaching as a Profession
How Schools are Organized and Connected to their Communities
Teaching Diverse Learners I:Multiculturalism and Gender in Today's Classrooms
Teaching Diverse Learners II: Academically Diverse Learners in Today's Classroom
Partners in Learning:Parents, Families, and the Community
The Politics of American Education
Education and School Law
Historical and Philosophical Influences on Teaching and Learning in America
Standards and Assessment: Their Impact on Teaching and Learning
Teaching the Curriculum
Technology, Teaching,and Learning
Your Teaching Career

In addition, there is a list of useful resources at the end of each chapter, such as relevant websites, suggested titles for further reading, and also ideas for one's professional portfolio.

Conclusion - a valuable education text for teachers.

Goodwill
By Physis de Azzis
I know what you are thinking, and that I am a teacher or I am on that path of becoming one. Regardless of how this sound, I got the book for only one reason and that was I was searching into the wealth, differential states of development, mixed expectations for schools which are reflections of the heterogeneous character of the students and how the government is still screwing up by such potential damage of cuts & Pastes. In addition, I must state it is a book of learning laws and special problems, primarily of decentralization rather than centralization and those issues of tests. Finally, it is a book for future teachers. The variety of circumstances which I liked this book is the challenge the new teachers have in front of the American schools and the ultimate choice once that student-teacher candidates become part of this American spectrum. This isn’t a novel book; it’s an assigned, textbook, but a good one to read.

Teaching book
By Ernest Michael Nelson
The book has a lot of antiquated idea and theory's. personal would not recommend this text book. There are no methods in is book used or practice anymore. It a book that give very simple examples that common sense you should already known. Everything in the book is filled with the old axiomatic ideals and preconceived notations.

He rides a Ducati 748 and is preparing for the2006 Paris -- Dakar rally, if his wife lets him

Where's Charley?

CHARLEY: I remember the moment it started. It was October 2004, very late one Friday night. We were in the old office in Bulwer Street with boxes all around us, bits of paper, all the office equipment gone. For a few minutes we just stood there reflecting. This is where Long Way Round had all begun, where we'd planned everything, checked and re-checked the maps: it's where we'd first seen the bikes.

It was over, finished: we'd ridden around the world, a mammoth journey; an epic adventure. But it was over now.

The maps were still on the wall and we stood before them once more. Ewan glanced at me.

'What do you reckon, Charley?'

'I don't know.'

'South America, India maybe?'

I looked up at him. 'What about riding through Africa?'

Ewan and I first met on a film set in County Clare more than a dozen years ago, our friendship born out of our passion for motorbikes. We've been best mates ever since. We'd always talked about riding together; France maybe, Spain. But then Ewan walked into a map shop, and over dinner that night we decided to forget France or Spain, we'd go the whole hog and ride around the world. The adventure of a lifetime, the two of us off on a couple of bikes. I wasn't sure we could pull it off; I wasn't sure it would even happen.

But it did. A late-night conversation became a dream, the dream became an adventure and that adventure proved to be a pivotal point in my life.

I grew up in the movie business, but I'm dyslexic...and I mean badly: if it hadn't been for my dad taking a year out to teach me to read, life could've been very hard. Even so, reading for acting parts could be difficult sometimes. Historically I'd enjoyed success in movies like The Emerald Forest, but after Long Way Round the direction of my life altered completely. I found myself in places like the pit lane of Moto GP circuits with heroes like Kenny Roberts grabbing my arm and telling me how much he'd enjoyed watching our journey.

I was no longer just John Boorman's son - in fact my dad rang me up the other day to tell me he'd introduced himself to someone and they'd said, 'Oh, Charley Boorman's dad'.

My career was now in motorcycling - albeit not in a conventional way - and the success of Long Way Round enabled me to live another dream. Ever since I can remember I'd always wanted to race bikes, so together with Russ Malkin, a very good friend and producer/director of Long Way Round, I entered the world's most dangerous race: the 2006 Dakar rally - five days in January where I rode ridiculous distances at ridiculous speeds before an innocuous crash tipped me off and I broke both my hands. (I never made it to the sand dunes and I've unfinished business there.) That dream was over for now, but another was just beginning.

Ewan flew in for the end of the Dakar to congratulate us all (my fellow teammate Simon Pavey had made it all the way to the finishing line). He was joined by film maker David Alexanian, the fourth member of the team that created Long Way Round. There we were in Dakar - all together again. And there in the scorching sun we confirmed what we had first mapped out over a year before in Bulwer Street. The adventure was on again - John O'Groats to Cape Town: we would ride the Long Way Down.

Once my hands were healed, the first thing Ewan and I did was return to the Royal Geographical Society in London, the place where we'd mapped out the first trip. Our bikes parked outside, I took my helmet off. The old red brick building seemed very familiar.

'So here we are again, Ewan. What do we say to them this time?'

He laughed. 'How about: Hi, remember us? We're back for more.'

Inside I quickly recalled how solemn the place felt; the arched windows, blue carpets and the magnificent ancient maps that decked the walls. One in particular dated from 1920 and at the bottom it was engraved with images of the old continent, names and places going back to colonial days when just about every European country fought for a share of the spoils. Ewan pointed to a picture of a guy in a pith helmet in a pretty compromising position with a tribesman. 'Hey, Charley,' he said. 'Here's how you made friends with the natives back then. See, you grabbed a man by his willy.'

In the journey-planning office we met the same assistant we'd spoken to before and she had yet more large-scale maps spread on a mahogany table.

'Have you decided on a route?' she asked us.

I shook my head. 'Nothing definite yet, but we're going to ride down through Europe, I think, probably cross from Sicily.'

'We'd like to follow the Nile,' Ewan added. 'It's one of those journeys, you know; one of the great trips of the world.'

She nodded. 'Sudan is pretty unstable and so are parts of Ethiopia. You'll need to be up on your paperwork.'

I rolled my eyes. 'Jesus, paperwork. The Ukraine, Ewan. Remember?'

'You mean when we waited nine hours to get in - how could I possibly forget?'

'Ethiopia is absolutely beautiful though,' the assistant went on, 'and despite the problems they're really trying to build up tourism. Sudan is full of open spaces, the Africa of the movies, if you like.' She smiled then, a little warily. 'There are security issues, however.'

I cast a glance at Ewan. She was right, as we knew only too well. We'd only just started investigating the route and already knew we'd need armed guards to get us through places like northern Kenya. We were thinking about going into the Democratic Republic of Congo, and weren't sure whether we'd have to go through Zimbabwe. This was going to be a very different journey from Long Way Round, and I think we were only just beginning to realise how different.

Having reacquainted ourselves with the Royal Geographical Society we headed for the wilds of Devon and a weekend's survival course. The weather was shit, a cold, drizzling rain, and to make things even more miserable, Ewan had his tent up before me. He was crowing about it. I mean, he never gets his tent up before me. It was galling. There was some consolation however: he'd put it up at the bottom of a hill and it was raining, which meant there was every chance he'd have a river running through it before long.

After that, we got lost in the 'wild wood' whilst hunting for strategically placed survival rations, and then we had to build shelters from fallen branches and bits of foliage.

Not that we're competitive or anything, but my A-frame and ridge was up, the sides constructed and I was already onto the roof whilst Ewan was still going on about a 'long ridge pole' and the 'bell end' being big enough. After making a wall of branch and fern, the last layer was leaves. Lying inside I could still see daylight and my feet stuck out, though I only discovered that when the instructor kicked them. He proceeded to tell us about a friend of his who went to sleep with his head sticking out of a similar shelter in Africa, only to be woken by a hyena ripping off his face. Our instructor liked telling those kinds of stories: he liked to tell them a lot.

He was complimentary about my shelter, however, testing thestructural quality by climbing right over it while I was lying inside. In his own words, it didn't budge an inch.

Ewan was arranging leaves and ferns and other bits and pieces; like a boy scout he was, having a whale of a time. 'Colour coding confuses your enemy,' I heard him mutter.

Finally he was finished, the branches covered with sprays of fern and leaf. He was stretched out inside and the instructor asked him if he felt confident that it was structurally sound.

Ewan replied that he did.

'Good,' the instructor said, 'because I'm going to walk on it.'

He'd barely shifted his weight when the 'bell end' Ewan had been so proud of collapsed, showering our Jedi Knight in broken branches.

For a moment there was silence. Then from the depths we heard him: 'Yeah, well, I think obviously there's room for improvement. But generally...' We could see his hands, gesticulating from under the crushed ridge. 'I was quite happy with its...you know, I liked the feel of it and it smelled really nice.'

On cue and not without a certain sense of ceremony, the rest of the shelter collapsed; a few moments later Ewan emerged: half a beard, his woollen hat askew.

'Shame,' he said. 'I put a lot of love into that.'

EWAN: What Charley didn't mention was that his A-frame was put together by the instructor. That's why it was so solid. I did mine myself. Not quite the same thing, is it?

The instructor really did like his tales of horror: hyenas eating people; elephants trampling our campsite; not to mention the machete-wielding madmen lurking outside every bar. Having said that, he also told us that despite our laid-back attitude, I was 'wily' and Charley was really 'industrious'.

From Devon, hyenas and elephants, it was Essex and a replica of the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. Driving down a track in a 4x4 we had the feeling we were about to be ambushed. We were right - just as we were considering potential escape routes a mine exploded in front of the truck.

David Alexanian, who would be joining us on the real trip, was driving. He immediately started backing up. More flash bangs went off, mines, or grenades maybe, exploding behind us.

Now we heard the rattle of gunfire and a man appeared on our right. Heavily built, he approached the vehicle at a crouch, wearing camouflage and carrying an AK-47. We dived for the doors on the passenger side only to find another guy bellowing at us and brandishing not a gun, but a couple of vicious-looking axes.

We piled out of the vehicle. Hands in the air, we tried to talk to the gunmen - a whole gang of them now. We tried to explain about UNICEF, and what we were doing. They weren't listening or didn't understand: they didn't care. Before we knew it we were forced away from the vehicles, our captors demanding money, jackets, our watches.

We'd discussed such a situation with our instructors and they had advised us that in really dangerous areas, convoys of vehicles were put together under armed guard. Our trip was high profile ...

Not great literature, but an enjoyable ride nonetheless
By Luke T. Evans
I've enjoyed both of the "Long Way" books. They're an enjoyable read even if they aren't great literature or exceptional travel writing. Ewan and Charley seem like two great guys and their humanity and down-to-earth natures really show in these stories. Some of the reviews here have been negative, with many of them criticizing the trip's supposed lack of purity in that Ewan and Charley had a support team and a few sponsors. Whatever. If you ask me, the support team was pretty thin, and it's clear that many times they were just winging it and improvising as they went along. This was emphatically not a Camel Trophy-type extraveganza, with flocks of accompanying helicopters, spare vehicles, and squads of mechanics standing by with truckloads of spare parts, and it certainly didn't appear to be a luxury trip by any stretch. Call it a compromise between a full-on expedition (complete with porters and truckloads of "essential equipment") and a threadbare by-the-seat-of-our-pants penniless slog taking many months or even years. Sure, in a perfect world you'd take two years to undergo such a journey, and thus provide yourself with plenty of time to see everything and get to know the people and cultures in great detail. But let's face it, 99.99 percent of us will never be able to pull that off, either due to: 1) family/career obligations; 2) a lack of time; 3) a lack of money; 4) a lack of balls; or 5) all of the above. That's just the way it is. But these guys went out and did it, however imperfectly. That's just fine in my book. Jolly good, blokes!

Loved it!

So interesting to get a behind the scenes look at what was going on during the documentary on Long Way Down. Loved the DVDs, and the books complete the experience!

A well received sequel!
By Kevin J. Brigandi
In Long Way Round, Charlie and Ewan set the stage for two best friends and their motorcycle journeys across the globe. You get to know the cast and crew in a personal way and see the journey through the eyes of avid adventure motorcyclists. In Long Way Down, they've ditched the whiney trip doctor from the first trip and replaced him with a doctor who better fits the spirit of the team. This film feels more personal to the viewer. Charlie and Ewan are more emotional this time around and the scenery and imagery is amazing. The stories of the journey are heartfelt and you really get a different perspective of how people live with each other and their environment throughout several different countries in Africa. The language is colorful at times for a younger audience (Charlie uses the F word extensively) but the story and journey are worth it. If you are not a motorcyclist, you will probably still enjoy the movie. If you are a motorcyclist, you'll be planning your next trip!

Throw Yourself a Bone and Read This Remarkable Book
By James Clar
"Seventeen-year-old boys die in car crashes, they die of meningitis, rare forms of cancer, suicide. Mostly, they don't die at all. They pass through the age, shedding awkwardness and anger and self-loathing on the way." But young Ben Hatto was about to die all right, the victim of a professional hit man's bullet to the forehead. And in that he was also about to join his mother and father lying in pools of still-warm blood one floor below in the kitchen and family room (respectively) of their comfortable suburban London home.

The lone remaining member of the Hatto clan, twenty-year-old Ella, is vacationing with her boyfriend in Italy. Blissfully unaware of the gruesome fate that has befallen her family, Ella is disturbed when she notices a nondescript middle-aged man watching her as she sits in a caf. Before she is able to share her concern with her partner, Chris, the stranger rises from his seat and, gun in hand, moves toward her. Shots ring out in the calm of an Italian evening. Two younger men, apparently bent on doing harm to Ella, lie dead on the sidewalk. Before Ella even realizes what has happened, she and Chris have been spirited away by their shadowy guardian, a dangerous and enigmatic figure who introduces himself simply as "Lucas." Lucas, ex-assassin turned bodyguard, has been sent by Ella's father to keep watch surreptitiously on the youths as they travel. When Lucas learns what has happened to his employer he breaks the news to his charges. He fulfills his professional obligation by delivering Ella and Chris safely to the consulate in Switzerland.

So begins Kevin Wignall's powerful and evocative new novel, FOR THE DOGS. It may seem hard to believe that Wignall, author of the stunning PEOPLE DIE (2002), could manage to equal let alone surpass that debut performance, but surpass it he has. FOR THE DOGS is a book that will shock, amaze, confuse and disorient you. In prose that runs the gamut from the clinically terse to the elegiac, the author tells the story of two individuals - one, Ella, who becomes consumed with revenge and another, Lucas, who wants nothing more or less than redemption, genuine human contact and a chance to meet the daughter he has never even seen.

With intriguing, multi-dimensional characters and dialogue that is hardboiled enough to shatter your fillings yet touching enough to make you cry, FOR THE DOGS is a novel that you won't soon forget. With it, Wignall has cemented his reputation for writing literary noir of the highest caliber. Only a very few people out there today write crime novels that are this moving, this emotionally complex and which pack this kind of visceral wallop. Contrary to what you might be thinking, this isn't a "must read" title. All trite hyperbole aside, the truth is it's actually a "read it all costs" kind of book [...]

Revenge is a deadly proposition
By Jennifer
A hitman enters the Hatto household and ruthlessly kills everyone within. It begins a ripple effect that will be felt half way across the world.
Ella Hatto relaxes in Italy with her boyfriend. But when she sees a stranger she's sure she's seen before, she's suddenly on guard. When this man crosses the street towards, her gun in hand, she's terrified. Shots are fired, but at two men down the street. To Ella the stranger says simply, "Come with me." And Ella's life changes forever.
Lucas is hitman out of retirement whose sole job is to get Ella safely out of Italy and into the confines of the British consulate. But something about her strikes a cord in him. He's reminded of a past he tried hard to forget, including a daughter he's never met. A daughter he's decided he's ready to meet.
Ella's life becomes a downward spiral of sadness and rage. Admonished by friends and family to get over it, she's left isolated and sick with grief. She believes there's one cure. Revenge.
Lucas agrees to help her, hoping that the death of the man that killed her family will bring her peace. A peace he seeks for himself. There is no way he can know that helping her will unleash events that will lead one of them to redemption and the other to death.
For the Dogs establishes Wignall as a modern noir writer with roots deeply immersed in the classics. His allusions to the Nibelungenlied (translated by A.T. Hatto) confirm the depths behind the plot. This in no way translates to a dry epic with a sluggish pace. There is plenty of action and his characters operate under constant threat. It is an in depth exploration of death and isolation propelled by the twin conduit of revenge and redemption. The ending will leave you breathless.

VIOLENT PACIFIST HITMAN SEEKS THE QUIET LIFE
By Sesho
20 year old English major Ella Hatto is on vacation in Italy with her boyfriend, Chris, when some gunmen attempt to kill her for no reason that she can fathom. Lucky for her that her dad had assigned a bodyguard, an ex-hitman named Lucas who came out of retirement as a favor, to shade her and protect Ella as necessary without her knowledge. Unknown to Ella, assassins have taken out her family back at home, and she just might be next. Ella can't figure it out, until Lucas informs her that their middle class lifestyle is just a ruse and that her dad has concealed that all these years he was a millionaire, and that he had come by this money through shady dealings. Could these executions be tied into some grudge from his past? Ella will have to stay alive to find out the answers, and death is always a possibility.

I have a lot of complaints about this novel. First of all, it has no surprises in it. You know pretty much where it's going before it gets there. The person behind the killings becomes apparent pretty early on, so why waste a hundred pages on it? Another thing is the characters. The sympathetic hitman who tries to get out of a business he despises has just been done so many times. Also, for a hitman, Lucas seems a little too flashy, assaulting college students and sticking guns in their face. That's really not the way to blend into the background. The attempt to make him a literary man, like having him remember his ex-girlfriend and thinking about Proust falls short too. Ella's slow descent into the dark side reeks of cheap tragedy. Plot-wise, the novel is very thin. It would probably make a great movie because it lacks any intelligence and is completely composed of stock characters. A very disappointing work.

An Exellent Resource
By J. Brown
This new photographic atlas is head and shoulders above the alternatives in the marketplace.

1) Color photos, and lots of them
2) Intact embryos as well as extensive serial sections
3) Good labeling
4) Useful diagrams (also color)
5) Extensive descriptions of developmental processes
6) Descriptions of some visualization techniques to observe particular structures/systems

BUT. . .

There are some important omissions.
1) No zebrafish
2) No Drosophila

Great for the price!!

I needed this book for one of my senior university classes and was astonished by the condition the book arrived. The book was as if it had just left the printing machine, the pages were flawless and had everything as described in the description. This is a must buy book if attending university or college!!

This atlas was so helpful whilst taking my developmental biology course. Even though I'm long out of school, I've kept this book as a reference. The images are wonderful!
